Publisher's Summary
In this terrifying novel from the best-selling "master of the psychological thriller" and author of Baby Teeth (Entertainment Weekly), three friends set off on a hike into the Grand Canyon - only to discover it's not so easy to leave the world behind.
It was supposed to be the perfect week away....
Imogen and Beck, two sisters who couldn't be more different, have been friends with Tilda since high school. Once inseparable, over two decades, the women have grown apart. But after Imogen survives a traumatic attack, Beck suggests they all reunite to hike deep into the Grand Canyon’s backcountry. A week away, secluded in nature...surely it’s just what they need.
But as the terrain grows tougher, tensions from their shared past bubble up. And when supplies begin to disappear, it becomes clear secrets aren’t the only thing they’re being stalked by. As friendship and survival collide with an unspeakable evil, Getaway becomes another riveting thriller from a growing master of suspense and a “literary horror writer on the rise” (BookPage).
What the critics say
“A terrifying thriller about female friendship...Zoje Stage is continuing her run as the master of the psychological thriller."—Entertainment Weekly
"Strap into your pack and step into this inky darkness with Zoje Stage, and know that, after the sun goes down, nothing’s safe." (Stephen Graham Jones, New York Times best-selling author of The Only Good Indians)
"Zoje Stage’s Getaway is exactly the kind of heart-in-your-throat, how-are-they-going-to-get-out-of-it thriller that I love - a rip-roaring wilderness adventure story that tests the characters’ physical abilities and moral resolve to their limits. Tense, unpredictable, and utterly compelling, Stage’s complex story of friendship and survival is a must-read. I loved this book!” (Karen Dionne, internationally best-selling author of The Marsh King’s Daughter and The Wicked Sister)
“An outstanding read. Suffice it to say that what follows is a stunning - at times sensitive, at times feral - exploration of just how deep and powerful the bonds of sisterhood and female friendship can be and how a squeaky mouse can become a roaring lion.... Recommend as women’s fiction as well as psychological suspense.” (Booklist, starred review)

Overcoming Trauma
This isn't the kind of story I would normally enjoy. But it's a powerful one, and so beautifully written that even if I hadn't come to like it it would have deserved 5 stars. (Slight spoilers below, but this happens early on in the book).
This is a horror story about three friends with a complex history going on a hike together and getting kidnapped. It's grounded in reality as we experience every haunting moment alongside these characters. Despite this, the story's main focus is on healing from trauma and these women finding out just how strong they are and how far they'll go to protect each other.
CW: Anti-semitism, surviving a shooting, kidnapping, murder, rape (it isn't described but its mentioned), PTSD

Boring
Don’t waste your time. It took almost 4 hours into the story to even have any danger. This should not be in the mystery or thriller genre. It’s a snooze.

Suspenseful and satusfying
Zoje Stage is a master. She gives you deep, nuanced portraits of characters while ratcheting up the suspense. Her range is vast — this book is nothing like her previous books in plot, but all are exciting with surprise twists. The performance is great, too. Highly recommended.

You know I really do try to enjoy this authors work. Her writing style and creepiness is at best in the middle of her novels. The beginning usually starting out as a slow burn. But when it came to "Baby Teeth" and "Wonderland" those endings were so disappointing to me.
And so now I bring you to her next novel "Getaway". My honest opinion. It was okay. Not great. But a decent suspenseful read.
The characters were not connecting with me as a reader. That Tilda. My God! 😳 and the sisters drove me crazy. Imogen, I understand had a lot going on mentally and spiritually. But where was her confidence, her fight the whole entire time of this book? Her sister got away with so much and Imogen agreed with everything thing her sister said. It's like "you can have your own opinion". I felt like she had no brains for herself.
The whole thing with what happened with Tilda's old boyfriend shouldn't have been in the book. It just caused to much chaos with Imogen's character. She was already broken from what happen at her church she didn't need to have more.
The stranger in the woods with them. I did not like. I would have enjoyed the book a lot better if one of the sisters or Tilda were the ones that went crazy and was the danger of the whole situation. A man on the run, who just so happens to be in the woods with them. I don't know. I think the three friends should have been battling together in the woods with one of them going insane. That's a good story.

Take the bad reviews with a grain of salt.
Take from the reviews what you will, but this book was marketed wrong IMO. While the description and appearance give the impression of an intense thriller or horror story, this is more a story of the personal growth of 3 women, particularly Imogen, as the result of a terrible situation. There are some tense moments in this story, but this is definitely more of a character driven drama than a thriller or horror story. Getaway wasn't what I expected, but I did enjoy it. In fact, I personally think this is Stage's best novel yet. Give it a chance.

A kidnapping on a Grand CanyonGrand Canyon Hike
Two sisters and a friend go on a hike in the Grand Canyon and on the second day encounter a man who is on the run after shooting a deputy. He kidnaps our imprisons them so his whereabouts went be reported. Their challenge is how either to escape or get him to free them. The story exams the hopes and fears of the young women and their past as friends and sisters. The depiction of the Grand Canyon experience isn’t bad and enriched the story.

most of the book was quite entertaining
until the last chapter to two it was entertaining.. I found it really ridiculous the way it went in the end and the author needed a more thoughtful outline to be sure the ending was a slam bam ending. which it was not. I was going to recommend this book to my sig. other but he would be very disappointed in the way it turned out. highly unlikely. I think the reader was very good and did a great job.

Call the editor. !!!
I love Zoje’s books ! Unfortunately this one was a disappointment. It had too much personal information about what the characters were feeling and thinking. It was just too long for me. But it won’t stop me from reading another one of her books…I thought the narrator did an excellent job.
