Publisher's Summary

Jig the goblin was the runtiest member of an admittedly puny race. Jig was scrawny, so nearsighted as to be almost blind, and had such a poor self-image that when he chose a god to worship, it was one of the forgotten ones - after all, what other sort of god would have him as worshiper? He also had a cowardly fire-spider for a pet, a creature that was likely to set your hair on fire if it got into a panic. Made to stand tunnel watch by the goblin bullies who'd been assigned the job, it was just Jig's luck to be taken captive by a group of adventurers - with the usual complement of a dwarf warrior, a prince out to prove himself, his mad wizard brother, and an elfin thief. Forced to guide this ill-fated party on their search for the Rod of Creation - though Jig had no more idea how to find it than they did - he soon had them stumbling into every peril anyone had ever faced in the fantasy realms. And they hadn't even found the Necromancer or the Dragon yet!

Performed by Nanette Savard, Dylan Lynch, Terence Aselford, Eric Messner, Casie Platt, Thomas Keegan, Richard Rohan, Mort Shelby, Kimberly Gilbert, Danny Gavigan, Michael Glenn, Tim Getman.

Great Fun, Individually Complete, Good Performance

This trilogy is in Plus for September 2023 so get it fast.

Because of the comparatively short length I would not have been exposed to this writer without the Goblin Trilogy appearing in the Plus Catalogue. I'm very glad it did.

Jim C. Hines is my kind of series author. He knows how to create a series where each volume cleanly stands alone while building a unified whole. There are no "oh my god, if I don't buy the next book I will never know how this or that story cleaned up" tactics, which I consider a form of fraud when not disclosed prior to purchase.

This book one, Goblin Quest, goes beyond introducing us to the main characters and the world, to deliver a complete tale full of humour and good-natured adventure. Without making goblins cuddly creatures, the author does make our hero appealing (not to look at tho!) and a character we want to invest in. It is well worth a read.

I don't give it five stars because it is not spectacularly original material or uniquely told. But I enjoyed it enough that I went straight into the second and third volumes. These are the Plus gems that make my Audible membership worth maintaining even when I don't spend a credit for months on end.
