About this listen

A chance to escape. A haunting surprise. Dragged into a homicide by the spooky victim, can a reluctant sleuth solve the case and set up a fresh start?

Clara Kelly only wants to be free. Fleeing her abusive husband and holing up in his empty historic Salem, Massachusetts house, she’s shocked to find it already occupied by the ghosts of a sad-eyed Union soldier and cat. And just as the thirty-two-year-old fugitive accepts that the supernatural is real, a deadly car accident out front brings the phantom of the recently deceased to her door claiming he’s been murdered.

Afraid every moment she lingers will bring more trouble, she tries to ignore his pleas. But after the desperate spirit agrees to aid a puppy in peril in exchange for her help, Clara relents to playing sleuth while looking over her shoulder for the slime who made her marriage a living hell.

Can she find purpose in parting the veil of possibilities?

Going Ghost is the light-hearted first audiobook in the Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries series. If you like endearing characters, unexpected journeys, and stories with a lot of heart, then you’ll love Dina Marie’s twist of fate.

Love that the story is in Salem, a place I’ve only been once but fell in love with. I love the strong female main character. I love the murder mystery and the ghosts. Excited to listen to the next one. Glad I found this author. Great narrator also.

Cozy Salem story!

Maybe I am lacking patience today, but this book started to annoy me by Chapter 6.

Why on earth would someone who apparently is being abused move into a house owned by her husband, not knowing if said husband has someone caring for the property beforehand? The house is supposed to be nice, but has never been kept up, seemingly a house the husband bought and neglected. SMH, no one buys a house only to have it collect dust. She had no clue what she was walking into. Make it make sense!

Who escapes an abusive husband, throws away the wedding ring, brings little money, has her cell phone, walks through the front door, instead of sneaking in from the back, or hiding in her car to see if anyone is around, instantly connects to the next door neighbor's wifi because she needs to find a market, goes to that market in the middle of the day and then thinks whoops, when strangers ask her questions because she is a new face? no one who is actually abused, that's who. If you are going to sell a plot, make it believable. Why couldn't this be a she is newly divorced and starting fresh scenario?

The entire writing style was grating, and it boggles my mind that yes, we have met one ghost by this point, but all the ramble and nonsensical filler that I've listened to in the last hour has done nothing to further the story, so it doesn't fare well for the rest of the book. Bring in the dead person already! I'm already so disappointed by her escape plans, I'm dreading her ability to actually solve a mystery.

DNF - horrible start
