#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “mercilessly entertaining” (Vanity Fair) instant classic “about the nature of identity and the terrible secrets that can survive and thrive in even the most intimate relationships” (Lev Grossman, Time)—now featuring never-before-published deleted scenes

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

What the critics say

“Absorbing . . . In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage—and of a recession-hit Midwest—by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first-person account.”The New Yorker

“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages . . . Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”The Wall Street Journal

“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose . . . even while you know you’re being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”O: The Oprah Magazine

Worth the hype.

I'd seen the movie before reading the book (sacrilege!) so the twists and turns of the book weren't the hammer fall of suprise that they were designed to be. However, giving it a listen without prejudgment, allowing the story to be its own animal independent of its adaptation, the story really does shine, the performers are excellent (with the winner being Julia Whelan, her turn on a dime tonal shifts and patronizing impersonations of those she gives voice to inside of Amy's own voice is excellent, I found Kirby Heyborne's voice no quite suited to Nick's character, but still well done)and the emotional tones all hit where they aught to.

Loved it!

The story is thrilling, the readers wonderfully engaging (special shotout out to Julia Whelan who gives an exceptional layered performance as Amy), and that masterful reveal mid-novel....

A tale of unforeseen twists

I liked hearing the different voices and seeing the different perspectives of the characters. I’d recommend this book to readers that enjoy twists!

Underwhelmed

I expected an edge-of-my seat thriller so I had high expectations. I was underwhelmed with this story. The basic plot was interesting enough, but there is not a likeable character to be found...I didn't know who I was rooting for. And the ending was abrupt and disappointing.

The narrators were good and I liked having two of them doing the parts.

I got this book to listen to on a road trip with my husband. He lost interest in the story very quickly. I persevered but questioned whether it was worth my time.

Good narration, but got a bit tiresome

I read this book when it came out and loved it, but on audio it became a bit tiresome. There’s an add on by Flynn at the end with snippets of early drafts. I didn’t listen to it all.

Technically a book.

This is technically a book. That's the nicest thing I can say about it. The story is punishing, the writing is bland, and the voice direction is cartoonish. Would not recommend.

Amazing Read

I literally cannot find a single thing missing from this book. Gillian did such a wonderful job constructing the story around the characters. Definitely would read it again and again.
