Story
Like millions of others, Louis Theroux’s plans were mothballed by the onset of COVID. Unable to escape to the porn sets and the prisons and the maximum-security mental hospitals that are his usual journalistic feeding ground, the garlanded documentary maker began reporting on a location even more full of pitfalls and hostile objects of inquiry - his own home during a pandemic.

Why is every film or tv programme a sequel or a remake? Why are people so f***ing hung up about swearing? Why do the asterisks in that sentence make it okay? Why do so many people want to stop other people doing things, and how can they be stopped from stopping them? These and many other questions trouble David Mitchell. Join him on a tour of the absurdities of modern life - from Ryanair to Richard III, Downton Abbey to phone etiquette, UKIP to hot dogs made of cats.

Story
Bob Odenkirk’s career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explicate it for you. Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! But there is just one and one is plenty. Featuring humorous tangents, wild characters, and Bob’s trademark unflinching drive, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama is a classic tale told by a determined idiot.

Publisher's Summary
A funny, insightful memoir by much-loved documentary maker Louis Theroux, taking us on a weird and wonderful journey through two decades of groundbreaking television.
In 1994, fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore’s TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. Gawky, socially awkward and totally unqualified, his first reaction to this exciting opportunity was panic. But he’d always been drawn to offbeat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn’t.
In his audiobook, Louis takes the listener on a joyous journey through his life and unexpectedly successful career. Nervously accepting the BBC’s offer of his own series, he went on to create an award-winning documentary style that has seen him immersed in worlds as diverse as racist US militias and secretive pro wrestlers, the violent gangs of Johannesburg and extreme drinkers in London.
Arguably his biggest challenge was corralling celebrities in his When Louis Met series, with Jimmy Savile proving most elusive. Blindsided when the revelations about Savile came to light, Louis was to reflect again on the nature of evil he had spent decades uncovering.
What the critics say
"If you are a fan of Louis Theroux's self-deprecating humour and relaxed broadcasting style, you will enjoy this honest and soul-searching account of his life so far." (Sunday Express)

I did get Theroux this!
I'm a Theroux fan and have been for years but since I've been away from the U.K for a long time I've lost touch with a lot of his more recent work. This book was a great review of his early years and his path to becoming a big name in documentaries. it's a bit heavy on the Saville stuff ( and if you're not from the U.K you probably don't even know who that creep was ) but even so I really enjoy the content of the book and the pace of the reading. That's Theroux's thing though, you feel like it's just some breezy light hearted thing he's talking about but there's a lot more too it under the surface. A great audiobook imho.

Excellent!
Insightful, entertaining, and perfectly delivered by Louis himself in his inimitable way. Even if you aren’t familiar with his documentaries and programs, he gives more than enough context to get you up to speed. Highly recommended!

Mostly interesting
Super interesting if you’re already familiar with most
of his work. Although he does go in about Jimmy Savile a whole lot. As someone who isn’t British, that’s not something I’d really ever heard about.

Not what I was hoping for
I'm a big Louis fan so had high hopes for this but was sadly let down. It mainly consists of rehashing old bits from his documentaries, which I have already seen and a very heavy emphasis on Jimmy Saville. He mentioned in the epilogue that his editor was worried the book would become too 'Jimmy Saville focused' and he had to cut chapters out. Sadly this was still the case for me and I was tired of hearing about Jimmy.
