Loved it!

I've read all the Anita Blake books before, but it's nice to revisit then while I'm gaming or crocheting.
The only time I had an issue was with Jean Claude's voice. How she did it threw me off a bit. Otherwise great and I plan to get them all eventually.

Rereading after 20 years

I read this book first in the early 2000’s and was instantly hooked - I wish that the newer books retained some of the action + story seen from Guilty Pleasures to Obsidian Butterfly. I know it’s a been said over and over again by many fans of this series, but I’m still not sure why the books are so different, even adding in the levels of erotica seen in later books could have been balanced by actual story content. In effect, the latest books are full of straight up lazy writing - and they aren’t good.

I really liked the narration and the added music in this book - but I haven’t listened to the others yet.

Also, rereading, Anita Blake as a character is not particularly likable. Maybe it’s a trope of the time of publication in the ways she puts down other women in order to appeal more powerful to the men she interacts with, but the passage about Crystal is particularly brutal. This book is dated and her straight up mean girl description of Crystal highlighted that - and it wasn’t the only one. Anita Blake is an incredibly insecure figure - but I’m not sure she was meant to be written this way, and we never seem to get a closer look at this particular vulnerability.

All that aside, the plot is well done, there is content and action and suspense to the story, and many of the characters are easy to imagine - even if some of them still feel a bit stereotypical and generalized. My hope is to keep reading through this first part of the series, and this book did remind me why I originally loved the series so much in the first place.

Love this series

I have read and listened to this book numerous times. Laurell K Hamilton and Kimberly Alexis are an amazing story telling pair. Kimberly Alexis brings the Characters to life while Laurell K Hamilton writes wonderful stories of the preternatural. I absolutely love her stories.

A World Shared with the Supernatural

I enjoyed the premise of the world trying to live in unity with other beings and creatures and the concept of a church offering true eternal life

favorite series decided to listen to it this time

some of the character accent choices feel wrong but I appreciate the distinction between them and the subtle difference between Anita narrating and Anita speaking

A sad Dresden Files wannabe

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of good to say about this audiobook other than the narrator was decent.

The story is a bad knockoff. Full of lame cliches and no depth. Do yourself a favour and choose The Dresden Files over this. And be grateful for the saved credit.

My apologies to the author.
