Publisher's Summary

They took his daughter, so Micah comes to take their kingdom.

Fifty thousand gun-toting paladins march behind him, all baptized in angel blood, thirsty to burn unbelievers. Only the janissaries can stand against them. Their living legend, Kevah, once beheaded a magus amid a hail of ice daggers. But ever since his wife disappeared, he spends his days in a haze of hashish and poetry.

To save the kingdom, Kevah must conquer his grief and become the legend he once was. But Micah writes his own legend in blood, and his righteous conquest will stop at nothing. When the gods choose sides, a legend will be etched upon the stars.

Game of Thrones meets Arabian Nights in this blood-soaked epic fantasy inspired by The Crusades, featuring Lovecraftian gods, mischievous djinns, and astral magic.

incredible book

this was a spectacular book from start to finish. I am completely blown away after finishing it. The world is really cool, and the power system is very interesting also one of the more unique I have come across. The Lovecraftian horrors are used to excellent effect.

only issue for me with this book was I wish the narrator used a few more distinct voices for inportant characters

Fantastic narration. Engaging story.

Very well written and interesting. I’ve tried and returned five books before finding one that was worth finishing. I will definitely listen to the second one as well.

Hired the Wrong Narrator

Can't deny that Peter Noble has a lot of gravitas, and brings something great to his performance. Unfortunately he really only has the same 4 voices or so. when you primarily have two POV characters, but every background character uses variations of the same voice, the whole story just blends together. Even though Micah and Kevah are different voices, it is easy to just get lost and mix up who is speaking because every other character is so similar.

Not trying to take away from the narrator as a voice actor, he does seem "good", he just needs to work on variety. Additionally having a white narrator for this Middle Eastern fantasy was a big miss on the productions part. But I would definitely be interested to know how the author feels about it, maybe he loves the performance!

The story is great, has a lot of mythology, crazy abstract *things*, and wild action scenes. Sometimes I wondered if the "shocking" scenes were meant to be that way simply for shock value, or were supposed to highlight the horrors of war so to speak. There female characters are generally well thought out here, but sometimes the male characters have their tires pumped at the expense of the female ones. For example, there are a few times where the author takes a quick route to saying X male character is so desirable by saying any woman would be happy have that character share a bed with them. It's not terrible, it's just lazy which is a bummer because so much of this book is written so well that I still am rating the story 5/5. Hope this improves as the author moves forward with his writing.

Detail child murder makes this very distasteful

The book seems well written. I had trouble distinguishing different character voices by the narrator.

The big turn off for me is detailed description of murdering children. Not recommended.
