Publisher's Summary

The stunning sequel to Daughter of the Moon Goddess delves deeper into beloved Chinese mythology, concluding the epic story of Xingyin—the daughter of Chang’e and the mortal archer, Houyi—as she battles a grave new threat to the realm, in this powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and hope.

After winning her mother’s freedom from the Celestial Emperor, Xingyin thrives in the enchanting tranquility of her home. But her fragile peace is threatened by the discovery of a strange magic on the moon and the unsettling changes in the Celestial Kingdom as the emperor tightens his grip on power. While Xingyin is determined to keep clear of the rising danger, the discovery of a shocking truth spurs her into a perilous confrontation.

Forced to flee her home once more, Xingyin and her companions venture to unexplored lands of the Immortal Realm, encountering legendary creatures and shrewd monarchs, beloved friends and bitter adversaries. With alliances shifting quicker than the tides, Xingyin has to overcome past grudges and enmities to forge a new path forward, seeking aid where she never imagined she would. As an unspeakable terror sweeps across the realm, Xingyin must uncover the truth of her heart and claw her way through devastation—to rise against this evil before it destroys everything she holds dear, and the worlds she has grown to love . . . even if doing so demands the greatest price of all.

A Beautiful Squeal

There are not enough words to describe how beautiful this was. It captivated my emotions and I was close to tears for some of it. When the first book ended, I didn't know how it could go on and get even better. This book delightfully showed me what was inside the heart of the sun warrior.

Pretty good sequel

One thing this book had over the first one was that the lead female finally stopped biting the inside of her cheek until it bled. Seriously, could have had a drinking game with that in the first one.

There were a few parts in this book that I thought were going to be significant or connection to some bigger thing further along, and then did not. I thought the plot in the first one was tighter in terms of piecing things together, but this one still did a good job . You really had to wait a looong while for some of those pieces, though.

I honestly did not see that ending coming. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but the author put in a lot of effort to try and get readers to be good with it.

I didn't love how the big 'take down the enemy' plotline ended on a pretty rushed note. Maybe it's because I had assumed that was the book's climax and would wrap up quickly after that. So when what I thought was the denouement seemed to drag and drag, I started to get annoyed. That's the trouble with audio books rather than physical ones. It's a lot harder to know where you are plot-wise. So it wasn't until the real climax was happening that I figured it out. So be aware: what you think is the ending, isn't the ending.

Overall, I liked the first one better but this was still pretty good.
