Publisher's Summary

When Kurt Cobain died by his own hand in April 1994, it was an act of will that typified his short, angry, inspired life. Veteran music journalist Charles R. Cross fuses his intimate knowledge of the Seattle music scene with his deep compassion for his subject in this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the pain that extinguished it.

Based on more than 400 interviews, four years of research, and exclusive access to Cobain's unpublished diaries, lyrics, and family photos, Heavier than Heaven traces Cobain's life from his early days in a double-wide trailer outside of Aberdeen, Washington, to his rise to fame, success, and the adulation of a generation.

A great read

I was introduced to this book a number of years back and from start to finish it was a great read. I was a huge Nirvana fan from the first time I was introduced to them in the 90s but it wasn't until I read this book that I truly began to understand their music in a new way. Kirk lived a complex life which many didn't know only seeing his antics on TV and on stage. I found a better understanding for the musician behind the guitar and for his roots that made him.

Detailed accounts

What a great story of the life of Kurt, I mean that from the detail and information provided within. The story is graphic and non flattering at times. I feel that I have a greater understanding of what kurt was going through and what lead to his tragic demise. The details of the notes around the songs gives me a deeper connection to a number of the songs. I found myself listen to a number of them as I paused the audiobook for a moment.

Why have I never heard any of this

Don’t read this if you want to continue liking Kurt Cobain. I’m shocked by how effective efforts to cover up the truth of his life have been.

A beautiful story, told by a real fan

I could not put this book down. Charles R. Cross clearly worked diligently to research and learn as much as possible from family and friends. The story was well told from the perspective of someone who obviously loved Nirvana and Kurt Cobain deeply. Cross is sensitive and respectful in his telling of Cobain's life and the book was a joy to read. I continue to return to moments from this book daily, and am thankful to have picked it up.

Lloyd James was a well suited choice for the reading of this biography. He was unobtrusive and allowed me to fully focus on the story. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him speak!
