Even the inhabitants of secluded Nethercote looked pityingly upon young Henrietta, the vicar's sister; her plain features seemed to almost guarantee her a solitary future. And yet she had a determined spirit and magnificent hazel eyes. So when her great-aunt Hester left her unexpected wealth, Henrietta set out to conquer London's glittering high society and confound them all.

But the fashionable elite was less than warm in its reception, especially when the newcomer, this bold minx, made clear her intention of winning the heart of one of society's most treasured gems: the irresistible, extravagant, heart-stopping Lord Beau Reckford, a prize wildly beyond her humble origins.

Light and lively and made me laugh aloud. One oddity is that the hero straight up kidnaps the heroine.

Funny and fun, trigger warning below (spoiler)

Excellent narration of a slightly overblown story. I wasn’t expecting high literature, just some escapism, and this story is good for that. But there are so many twists, turns and miscommunications crammed into this plot that it eventually becomes tiresome.

It is quite impressive how many convolutions the author fitted into a relatively short story. The result is that it feels much longer, and there comes a point where one just thinks : “Oh no, not again, is this never going to come to a resolution?”, and wishes for the whole thing to be over.

But all in all, good escapist fun, and very funny in places.

Funny, silly story with too many twists, turns and miscommunications
