Publisher's Summary
An unsolved crime pits a desperate woman against a relentless killer in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s heart-stopping novel of psychological suspense…
Fourteen years ago, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to the abduction of her cousin Gina. She still remembers that lonely Virginia road. She can still see the masked stranger and hear Gina’s screams. And she still suffers the guilt of running away in fear and resents being interrogated as a suspect in the immediate aftermath. Now Kaitlin has only one way to assuage the pain and nightmares—by interviewing everyone associated with the unsolved crime for a podcast that could finally bring closure to a case gone cold.
But when a woman Kaitlin questions is later found stabbed to death, she fears that she’s drawn a killer out of hiding. It’s Detective John Adler’s fear that the murders have only just begun. Now his job is to keep Kaitlin safe.
As a bond between Kaitlin and Adler builds, the past closes in just as fast—and it’s darker than Kaitlin remembers. Soon, her wish will come true. She’s going to find out exactly what happened to Gina. Someone has been dying to tell her.

Good Story!
Yeah, I liked it, and I usually don't listen to books like this. I looked forward to my workout each day so I could listen to it, then started also listening to it in the car. The story line was compelling.
Good points: It was an excellent story, with mystery and suspense. Some other reviewers were confused by the timeline, but I didn't find it difficult to follow. I thought it was clearly spelled out what was happening in real time and what were "interviews." There were solid characters with interesting back stories. It read like a movie.
Bad points: Minor, but worth noting that there a few cases of similar physical action descriptions that repeated, such as, "He helped her in the SUV and then slid behind the wheel," and then a short time later we hear it stated nearly verbatim the next time they got into the vehicle. Each instance happened close to one another, and I thought I had lost my spot in the story, so I would fast forward only to realize that it was a repetitive description of physical action, not a glitch in my app. Those should have been caught in editing.
Also, I could have done without the two sex scenes which read more like soft core porn and didn't add to the story. Alluding to sex is always more sexy than graphic descriptions.
Overall, I recommend it.

Yet Another Love Story Inside A Mystery
I enjoy a good mystery—-psychological, suspenseful, medical, legal. But it seems that no one can write one without throwing in a sexual encounter. I’m not a prude by any means, but WHY is it ‘necessary’ to always have two characters end up in bed? Otherwise a pretty good story/plot, but not great.

What was Her Last Word?
I thought I was listening to a pretty decent mystery novel, then in the last hour of the book it suddenly turned into soft porn...
The VERY graphic sex scene takes you by surprise, it comes flying out of left field, it’s almost like the author wanted to trick you into thinking you were listening to a mystery-drama but then without warning, delves you into a steamy romance novel, ick (I don’t mind sex scenes when they’re mildly detailed, or even better yet, just eluded to). If I wanted a steamy romance novel I would have chosen to listen to one. Tacky.
Anyway, the story was decent. I was disappointed that the “podcast” part of it didn’t SOUND like a podcast, the narration during these parts was no different then the rest of the story. Being a lover of podcasts, that was what excitedly drew me to try out this book, it wasn’t what I was hoping for at all.
The narrator did a fine enough job with the characters, although it made my own throat hurt listening to her do male voices, you could hear the strain on her vocal cords, ouch!
Overall... I’m glad this was a Daily Deal and I didn’t waste a credit on it. This was my first listen of Mary Burton’s, and based on this book I probably will not listen to another of her’s.
And, what was Her Last Word??? Not only is the genre unclear, but I never did see the connection to the title in the storyline either. 🤷🏼♀️

Good Procedural as I would expect from Mary Burton
This is a very good police procedural. The book is tense and although not lightening paced it moves steadily along through a cold case.
The publisher's summary gives a good description of what to expect. The story unfolds as the protagonist (Katlin Roe) puts together a podcast to bring attention to the case of her cousin's disappearance 14 years ago. Through her own memories and interviews with people aware or involved each new chapter uncovers a little more of what happened that night. The problem is the people she interviews start turning up dead. At first the detective looks at Kaitlin as a possible accomplice but then she is almost murdered as well. The crime was interrupted and she ends up in the hospital instead of the morgue. Well written book with interesting characters and a surprising ending.
Brittany Pressley does a very good job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good Mystery and Narration
This was a good murder mystery and cold case mystery. I like Kaitlyn and Adler. The story line and plot was good.
There was a lot of dialogue throughout the entire book. It wasn’t full of filler moment nonsense.
Things developing and the case being resolved. It all flowed very well and was easy to follow along.
There was attraction between Kaitlyn and Adler. It did lead to a sex scene that was nicely written not rated G not erotica. they did have chemistry so it fell into place nicely.
As for the narration, it was great. The narrator did a great job on all the voices including the men and she had a nice reading boys.
All in all a great psychological murder mystery.

Painfully dull, I finally quit when...
I guess this is a romantic novel rather than the detective story or thriller it purports to be. Maybe fans of that genre will be satisfied. The slow-burn "romance" between the victim and cop is rather disgusting, not to mention illegal and unethical, if you ask me, and when they finally dove in face first, I turned off and deleted the title. Yuck.

OK mystery novel
It was ok as a distraction. Even a possibility for another with the 2 main characters. EXCEPT -- I am fine with a sex scene in a book that contributes to the story line or is between people who have a relationship where it seems the next step. And sometimes it supports the motivation for plot development. I don't like where it appears it was added in such unnecessary detail to entice a reader to follow a character or author for this part of the book.
