Publisher's Summary

Contrary to what some may say, this audiobook, rather than being the product of a demonic lie, is an open and honest set of answers to the questions wrestled with by countless Christians the world over. And while nothing in Heretic! is completely unique - that is, much of the theology contained herein goes as far back as Christianity itself - Distefano creatively puts his unique perspective and humor with care. Refreshing and liberating, this is a must listen for any who dare question their inherited doctrines.

Love is love, and I LOVED this.

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

As an LGBTQ person myself, I loved this. Beautiful and amazing.

Amazingly well done for the average person

Matt did an amazing job communicating his positions on today’s pressing concerns in evangelical Christianity. This is a book that exposes the heart of God and will help shape the future of the Christian faith for the better. Very thankful to have this as a resource.

Got big faith questions? Get this book!

For someone who calls himself a non-scholar, Matthew Distefano covers weighty religious matters in this book with a great deal of intelligence, wit, and grace. Heretic gives a place to explore deep and pressing questions of Christian faith and consider answers that mainstream Western Christianity prefers not to discuss. Matthew makes amazing, sensible, and compelling cases for hot button topics such as LGBTQ inclusion and affirmation in the church, deeper conversations and consideration about salvation, hell, and the "wrath" of God; and facing matters of Old Testament violence, the trouble with biblical inerrancy, and problematic end times views head on. This book is intelligent, thoughtful, brave, thought provoking, and all-around wonderful.

Thought provoking book, well narrated

This audiobook was a brief but fascinating listen, covering several hot-button issues such as universalism, homosexuality and OT violence. Distefano has clearly done his research, demonstrating that positions often rejected as heresy in the modern church can actually be traced back to the earliest believers. I would recommend to anyone who is deconstructing.

The narration was well done, the narrator captured the conversational tone of the book.

A Complex Theological Treatise Stated Simply.

Matthew DiStefano has an uncanny ability to bring incredibly complex ideas to the table with simple, easy to understand language. The ten items tackled in this book have shaped much of modern, American Christianity, and Christianity in the West, as a whole. But, Matthew breaks each idea down, through clever exegesis and a Christocentric view of Scripture. Bringing in anecdotal evidence, as well as rich Scriptural references, Matthew builds a world where the dominant faith is one that I want to desperately cling to. Whether you are in the process of deconstruction, are deeply rooted in a faith tradition that's seemingly crumbling around you, or have walked away altogether, this book will help build a more solid, Christ-like foundation for you to reconstruct on. To say this book has helped me would be an understatement. To say that this book has reoriented my theology, ideology, and worldview would be understatements. This is the book that I will be gifting friends and family alike for years to come as a means to say, "It's this simple. It can be this beautiful."

Well done!

Mr DiStefano has certainly done his homework on each and every topic that he covers herein. His arguments are fresh, logical and not your typical regurgitated info. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for solid, well-researched “cliff notes” on the topics within these pages. Well done!

Engaging

I found Heretic to be engaging, challenging, and enlightening. Even if you do not agree with what the author believes, it is worth the time to go through!

Matthew DiStefano may be called a heretic, but it's not true. he does swear, perhaps even in less than optimal times, but let's not let that distract us from the important work he is doing. MD has offered an alternative to the same tired ways of viewing the Bible and it's authors. His voice is fresh and energetic, and brought with it a sense.of hope for a believer like me. Heretic challenges the reader to open their mind, and ideally their Bible, to examine what's actually being said and re-think the stagnant and off-putting teachings we've been handed down from well (hell) meaning pastors and theologians of yesteryear and today. Not to say that his ideas and points of view and revelations on language and interpretation are new, but have been resurrected here by a guy who sounds like me. A smart ass sinner who loves Jesus. The real Jesus.

Way more info than I expected

there is so much more information than what I expected from this book. statements backed up with research, scripture, theologians and history. while you may not agree, it is eye opening and provokes thought. challenges what we have been fed. right or not, thats between you and God. but is a great conversation on theology.
