“I loved it."—Stephen King
From Jason Rekulak, Edgar-nominated author of The Impossible Fortress, comes a wildly inventive spin on the classic horror story in Hidden Pictures, a supernatural thriller about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.
Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.
Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force.
Knowing just how crazy it all sounds, Mallory nevertheless sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it’s too late.

Story
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Story
Ten years ago, six friends went on vacation. One made it out alive... In that instant, college student Quincy Carpenter became a member of a very exclusive club - a group of survivors the press dubbed “The Final Girls”: Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout's knife; Sam, who endured the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape the massacre at Pine Cottage. Despite the media's attempts, the three girls have never met.

Story
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

The pictures were great!
I loved the idea of this book to include spooky pictures! I had this as an audio book so I went and looked up the pictures that were in the book. Very cool! The child-like scribbly ones were the best. It would have been better having the physical book for this one. I kind of feel the pictures are the selling point of this story, and being able to see the picture right there as it gets mentioned in the story would have been much better. The story was pretty good too.

Surprising, fun, creepy, cool ending
This one had me guessing and I really liked what was all really going down. It does a great job of working with the notion of “crazy” and reminds readers the worst kind of crazy is tangible. It was fun and had a little cute bit of romance too.

Pleasant recommendation
My wife is an avid reader so I generally go to her looking for suggestions. She recommended this one and I was pleasantly surprised that unlike many crime/supernatural thrillers I didn't guess the ending before it came. the narrator did a good job as well, I find sometimes when a woman is doing the male characters they can blend together, but she was able to give each a distinguishable voice which made for a really pleasant listening experience, especially for chapters when I am listening while at work. Highly recommend!
