Publisher's Summary

She’s hunting. He’s watching.

Special Agent Macy Crow is a survivor. After a vicious hit-and-run nearly kills her, she gets right back to work, and now she’s gunning for a spot on the FBI’s elite profiling team. As an audition, she offers to investigate the recently discovered bones of Tobi Turner, a high school girl who disappeared fifteen years ago.

While investigating with local sheriff Mike Nevada, a former colleague and onetime lover, Macy discovers a link between Tobi’s case and several others that occurred around the same time as her disappearance. As Macy interviews victims and examines old cases, she uncovers a sinister picture of a stalker who graduated to sexual assault - and then murder.

Macy and Nevada race to put this monster behind bars before he can come out of hiding. But the murderer’s had years to hone his skills, and soon Macy herself becomes a target. She’s no stranger to pain and terror, but will Macy’s first profiling case be her last?

Pretty good mystery FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

This is a very compelling thriller by Mary Burton. First or second (depending on the site) in the Criminal Profiler series but the second book featuring Macy Crow. I would suggest listening to in order although it can be listened to as a stand alone.
After an accident in the previous book (The Last Move) leaves Macy Crow with an injury that continues to cause her pain, she is making all efforts to be accepted on to an elite profiling unit of the FBI.
Her first assignment/test she's sent on is in a small town where a missing teenage girl's bones are accidentally found. The girl had been missing for 14 years. When Macy begins to dig she also discovers other girls who went missing around the same time, a series of rapes and rape kits never submitted for testing. Why didn't the old sheriff submit them? Was he protecting someone? Once submitted they find the same rapist in a few. The antagonist kidnaps women and plays his sick "game " with them until they die.
There is some romance between Macy and the sheriff , who she had worked with and been intimate with previously. And a female deputy with a secret that could impact the whole case.

Great story but the narrator was terrible

Loved the story but the narration was horrible. Nevada sounded like a dolt! Too bad.

Male voices on narration just awful

This narrator does an adequate job on female voices but her male dialogue is SO bad that it distracts. Every male line is spoken in a low slow soft drawl that is reminiscent of a bedroom voice. And the story itself would benefit from some pretty stringent editing.

Good story

I enjoyed the story but the (fe)male voice of Nevada was so jarring I almost quit listening.

Great story

As with all Mary Burtons books that I have read the story is really good. The only thing that I would suggest is that the narration and the character voice sounds should be on the same level. I had to constantly change volume to accommodate hearing the story.

Could not handle the Nevada character's voice.

I am a big fan of everything I've heard from both this author and this narrator but the comically low and quiet voice of the Nevada character made this unlistenable for me.

Narrator for Nevada ruined the story.

There narrator that portrayed Nevada was terrible. For whatever reason the narrator kept their voice monotone and blah. Other voice portrayals were great and story would have been more bearable without the druggist sounding voice of Nevada. Don’t the authors get to listen to the narrators before the story is published?

Good book.

I like the story. I didn't particularly like the voice of Sheriff Nevada. Maybe she did it just the way it was meant to be. However I still enjoyed the book.
