Publisher's Summary

We’ve all heard of fake news, but what about fake history?

Dominic Sandbrook explores two and a half millennia of human history, traveling from the American Deep South to the air raid shelters of wartime Britain, to discover how the past has constantly been manipulated, rewritten and reshaped.

It turns out that when it comes to history, separating fact from fiction isn’t always easy. Many of the widely held beliefs about our past are based on a web of lies.

Waiting for more...

I thoroughly enjoyed this, so much so that I'm disappointed there are only 6! I dislike reading history so I listen to it and these angles of history were captivating.

Absolutely loved this!!

Some say that history cannot be rewritten. On the contrary, this series illustrates so well that it can not only be written but rewritten and edited according to who wishes to do so. A truly fascinating account of this reality!!

Hoping for more episodes

I was sceptical on what sort of track these episodes would take. But as I listened I found myself more and more intrigued and wanting to hear other examples. The episodes are not a right/left wing revisionism of history they are a deep dive into how cultures from our distant to recent past have used history. Extremely thought provoking. I do hope they release a second season!

A story badly needed in this post truth world.

An easy listen, broken into moderate length installments that can be conveniently consumed in a commute or during chores, this book was insightful and thought provoking. An interesting read that really questions not only the accuracy of historic accounts, but the motivations of the people who created those inaccuracies. Spoiler alert: they weren't always malicious in their intent.

thoughtful analysis of how history is used

Excellent analysis of carfully selected examples of how history can be manipulated to serve specific purposes. then, series asks the larger questions based on the case studies as a whole. The analysts of confederate statutes particularly relevant and thought provoking in current context of contested American self-image.
