À propos de cet audio

We've all heard of fake news, but what about fake history?

Dominic Sandbrook explores two and a half millennia of human history, traveling from the American Deep South to the air raid shelters of wartime Britain, to discover how the past has constantly been manipulated, rewritten and reshaped.

It turns out that when it comes to history, separating fact from fiction isn't always easy. Many of the widely held beliefs about our past are based on a web of lies.

Everybody loves historical yarn. We can watch the trials of humanity from a safe distance, then judge how well we did as a species or, more likely, how badly. And when you think things are getting better, along comes a figure or an act of nature that pushes us back to the brink again. Whatever your taste in bygone times, we've got some compelling history podcasts here, some light and humorous, some stuff you missed in history class in high school, but all ripe for learning more about the backstory on how we got where we are today.

An easy listen, broken into moderate length installments that can be conveniently consumed in a commute or during chores, this book was insightful and thought provoking. An interesting read that really questions not only the accuracy of historic accounts, but the motivations of the people who created those inaccuracies. Spoiler alert: they weren't always malicious in their intent.

A story badly needed in this post truth world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, so much so that I'm disappointed there are only 6! I dislike reading history so I listen to it and these angles of history were captivating.

Waiting for more...

All of know that the truth is defined by who told the story. And yet we still follow our history books as though they were a gospel rendition of times gone by.

For a podcast about how history is warped and twisted by those with political agendas, there sure is a lot of twisting and warping of history to meet a political agenda in this. The fact that the presenter clearly misrepresents contemporary facts that are easily double checked makes it hard to trust any claims or conclusions made by the presenter about historical facts that aren't contemporary and cannot be easily confirmed. It's kind of ironic that this whole series is a historian being dishonest about history in an attempt to illustrate how historians are often dishonest about history.

A lesson that fails its own test.

Some say that history cannot be rewritten. On the contrary, this series illustrates so well that it can not only be written but rewritten and edited according to who wishes to do so. A truly fascinating account of this reality!!
