Keller is a regular guy. He goes to the movies, works on his stamp collection. Call him for jury duty and he serves without complaint. Then every so often, he gets a phone call from White Plains that sends him flying off somewhere to kill a perfect stranger.

Keller is a pro and very good at what he does. But the jobs have started to go wrong. The realization is slow coming, yet when it arrives, it is irrefutable: Someone out there is trying to hit the hit man. Keller, God help him, has found his way onto somebody else's hit list.

“Nothing ruins everything like getting to know each other.”

John Keller is a classic hitman with a heart of gold, living in a more modern setting (computers and pagers) than most of his ilk. He waxes nostalgic about both art and the art of stamp collecting, in this darkly comedic and droll tale about our antihero contemplating his own life while taking the lives of others. Along the way he finds time for romance and solves a mystery or two. You know: the “same ol’ same old” for a hired killer from New York City. Keller and his handler, an elderly woman named Dot, have the most amusing (and often inane) conversations as they navigate the business of death on the dollar. Imagine Seinfeld was a contract killer and Elaine was his handler, and somewhere along the way they had to deal with a hitman hitting other hitmen.

A different twist in this one is that we almost never get the details on a hit until Dot and Keller discuss it later, usually over iced tea. It’s like a PG murder mystery where we fade to black every time a death is about to occur. George Guidall has an outstanding voice, bringing a delightful energy to such a drolly outrageous series of events.

My only serious beef is the use of “Metals Detector” every time Keller goes to an airport…which is numerous times. Was that an error by the writer or the narrator? Other than a kind of rushed climax, this is a fun book. Definitely something a little unique from what might be my favourite genre.
