Description

For fans of Jodi Picoult, Kate Hewitt and Ashley Audrain, a heart-wrenching novel about two women whose eggs are switched during IVF

Katherine is a woman full of obsessions. Everything clean, everything perfect, all the time. After seven years of trying—and failing—to conceive, she finally gives birth to Rose, her IVF miracle child. But she’s afraid that Rose may not be her daughter; her pale skin doesn’t match Katherine’s own.

Tess never got her happy ending. She took on IVF alongside Katherine and a group of hopeful mothers, but her daughter, Hanna, was stillborn. After a series of poor choices, she’s divorced, broke and stuck in a job that’s below her skill set.

Ten months later, Katherine and Tess get a call from the fertility clinic that reveals shocking news: the two women’s eggs were switched. While Katherine’s perfect life beings to crumble around her, for Tess it’s the glimmer of hope she needs to get her life back on track. But it will take a custody battle to decide who deserves to be Rose’s mother, a battle that will push both women to the brink.

With themes of racial identity, loss and betrayal, this emotional novel centred around a difficult moral question beautifully explores the complexities of motherhood.

Narrated well - story fell flat for me

I wanted to love this book. The topic was compelling & thought-provoking and I have had (and know people with) lived experiences that made this subject matter relatable. But outside of VERY brief moments, I found nearly everything about this storyline and the way it unfolded to be flat, predictable, and cumbersome to read.

The writing was elementary and mundane, there were very few moments I felt invested, and despite the potential - this multilayered storyline seemed singularly-focused and lacked real depth.

What capped it off for me, (and without offering a spoiler) there are gross inaccuracies in two integral parts of the story at the end. IOW - the events tied to a particular industry simply could not, and would never unfold as is written in this book. And ESPECIALLY not in Canada (where - in this book - that particular industry blatantly disregards specific declared legalities). The liberty granted for the sake of finding a path to the conclusion, is unrealistic and reads like the author is uninspired when determining that particular industry must fill the role of (convenient) antagonist and bully.

Again - I really wanted to love this. The subject matter and various themes beg to be explored. But we read this in our book club and the consensus was unanimous: the mechanics and execution were very disappointing.

I couldn’t turn it off!

This book was captivating. A compelling premise, well-written, and the characters were very relatable. A great listen, and I loved the narration. The voice can make or break an audio book for me! Highly recommend!

The story gripped me

I could not stop listening. The narrator, the character development, the story, was gripping. What an emotional journey. I highly recommend to everyone. As a parent, the story was heartbreaking. I changed how I felt about the main characters as details were revealed. What a well written storyline.
