Publisher's Summary

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and ingeniously resourceful characters, returns in this thrilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

“Sometimes the universe throws you a rope.”BILL HODGES

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Audiences have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries.

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl’s desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down.

Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are harboring an unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to: they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless.

Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver the shockingly twisted professors in this chilling new masterwork from Stephen King.

“I could never let Holly Gibney go. She was supposed to be a walk-on character in Mr. Mercedes and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart. Holly is all her.” STEPHEN KING

Another King classic

Another King story with complex characters and a “killer” story. Five stars! Very well done

Loved it!

I loved the character of Holly when she was first introduced, and really appreciate how her character has developed and grown. I thought this book was brilliant! Stephen King has been my favourite author since I read his first book, Carrie, right after high school. This book did not disappoint in any way. Highly recommend!

Good story but not his best work

The racist cop narrative got tiring real quick. Also the other narrative on the Covid pandemic was also over done. Other than those two, which I honestly rolled my eyes after the dozen or so times they were both mentioned, the story was good. However not King’s best work.

Lovely

The story is great as far as Holly Gibney storyline goes; however the narrator was so different from Will Patton's, who narrated all the other books/novella's in the series, it almost put me off in the first hour or so. But then her voice grew on me a bit and I was able to enjoy the book. Still took off a star as I was hoping for Will Patton's narration.

For any reasonable readers/listeners, the COVID references are there as the timeline was during that time and we know Holly is an OCD (she takes stuff too seriously sometimes).
For those that are hating on the few paragraphs of COVID and vaccine references (and returned the book because of them): if you didn't think you were far right extremist - you've thought wrong.

Excellent book!!

I love almost every book Stephen King writes. I haven’t read them all but probably at least 20 I think. I love the Bill Hodges books. They are some of my favourites. I’ve listened to them twice and read them all once. I thought the narrator sounded too young to be Holly but that didn’t detract from her performance. It was excellent!!! Great story, great pacing. I’m so glad I bought it. Will definitely buy the next in the series if there is another one.

Not bad Not great

Overall I thought the book was ok.
I've really never been a big fan or the bill hodges Holly gibney books , Holly's never resonated with me very much (I've listened to them all however) I did like the outside of the box villains altho the ending sort of falls into the same old for king , hes my absolute fav author but I do find hes great at world building and the villains are usually creepy but blow over so easily at the end, which I guess is believable in this one at least

I know the covid and vax talk was a hot button for alot of people looking at other reviews, I myself was double vaxd and still found some of the covid stuff cringey , I do think it makes sense considering the perspective of the antagonist tho

Great book

This was my first Stephen king book. I really enjoyed this story, and found the voice actress able to keep me entertained.
