About this listen

Kennedy Ryan presents book three in the Hoops series.

A deeply emotional, standalone romance set in the worlds of professional basketball and high fashion.

Divorced. Single dad. Traded to a losing squad.

Cheated on, betrayed, exposed. My perfect life blew up in my face, and I'm still picking up the pieces. The last thing I need is her.

A wildflower. A storm. A woman I can't resist.

Lotus DuPree is a kick to my gut and a wrench in my plans from the moment our eyes meet. I promised myself I wouldn't trust a woman again, but I've never wanted anyone the way I want Lo. She's not the plan I made, but she's the risk I have to take.

A warrior. A baller. The one they call Gladiator.

Kenan Ross charged into my life smelling all good, looking even better, and snatching my breath from the moment we met. The last thing I need is him. I’m working on me. Facing my pain and conquering my demons. I've seen what trusting a man gets you.

I. Don't. Have. Time. For. This.

But he just keeps coming for me. Keeps knocking down my defenses and stealing my excuses one by one. He never gives up, and now...I'm not sure I want him to.

TW: childhood sexual trauma, suicide

Oh, I love this book with all the same emotions that I had for Long Shot.

Lotus and Kenan are literally soulmates. Despite the situations they were both in boundaries were respected, which I so so appreciate. Their story flowed so beautifully, they were no unnecessary moments. Everything just felt so real. Kenan who’s divorced, but has a lot to work out between his ex-wife and their daughter, and Lotus who’s working on healing her trauma.

Kennedy Ryan wrote this story in a tragically beautiful way. The side characters were a little “funky” to me, but it did not affect the story whatsoever.

The narrators were amazing!! One of my first audio books had the same male narrator. It was great to hear his voice again. He does a great job! This was my first time hearing the female narrator and their pairing is perfect!

I will start off by saying this, I really liked both Kenan and Lotus, I thought their chemistry was off the charts. I liked the deep emotional journey that these characters went through, I thought they were both extremely mature (maybe Lotus more so than Kenan).

I did not like the voodoo/magic side story, I thought it was stupid. I also thought that Kenan’s daughter Simone read extremely juvenile, she’s supposed to be 14 and a lot of the things she said and did made me think she was 10 if not younger. Maybe it was just how the audiobook narrator read her parts 🤷‍♀️

As with all Kennedy Ryan books, please make sure to check trigger warnings.

I enjoyed it, really pulls on your heart. But had a lot of funny moments.

Good listen

This was a perfect story through and through. Kennedy Ryan knows how to bring raw emotion to everything she writes like no one else! Just perfection!

Wow. There really is no way to prepare for a Kennedy Ryan novel. If there is another romance novelist who proved that romance is about the full lived human experience in all of its messiness, humanity and complexity, I haven’t found them yet. I do wish there had been trigger warnings about some of the content, but I am also grateful that I had to sit in a lot of discomfort and unearth my own pain. This novel — like all of Ryan’s novels I’ve read — is akin to Beyoncé’s, “Lemonade.” It takes you down an unexpected course that crushes and unravels you as it also overwhelms you with a beauty and tenderness that makes you feel you’ll explode. It breaks your heart (after melting it first) and then offers the balm to tend to it. It is a humbling and cathartic experience to partake of Ryan’s beautiful mind and spirit. Mia Ellis and Jakobi Diem do an incredible job elevating the story even further with their voices. It was genuinely a gift and life-changing experience to read this book. It reminded me why art is not only important, but absolutely essential and something we should all revere and fight for. Thank you.

Heart cracked open by a KR novel once again
