Wonderfully read, but most tales not for kids

What did you love best about Household Tales by Brothers Grimm?

The narration is great! Kelly Lintz does a fantastic job bringing the characters to life without self-conscious cleverness. A pleasure to listen to.

Would you recommend Household Tales by Brothers Grimm to your friends? Why or why not?

After my children, age 5 and 7, enjoyed a nighttime reading of Rapunzel I bought this for some after-dark story time. I knew Grimm's Tales could be dark, but many are so gruesome that I have to preview and take notes before I can listen to them with my children. Many of the stories are variations on the same theme so it often feels like you've heard the stories before. (Children lost in the woods, evil step-mothers, beautiful maiden marries wealthy king, etc.) I'm glad I've been able to offer my children a different viewpoint of the folk tales than the Disney version most have grown up with and introduce them to real literature. The re-telling of these folk tales do a suprisingly good job painting a picture in the listener's head.

What does Kelly Lintz bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have maybe five "characters" in my bedtime story repertoire, many of which make my throat itch after a few pages. Lintz has, seemingly, hundreds which she transitions from one to another without skipping a beat.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. 22+ hours of folk tales. I doubt I'll ever get through them all.

No chapter titles - multiple stories per chapter

I wish it was easier to find a specific story. Audible really should've made each story it's own chapter, and titled them. A huge oversight or just negligence. Disappointing functionality for an otherwise wonderful collection.

Love the stories, but.....

Seems like the woman reading it is speed reading, and not actually following the story..... just reading. And she keeps using a “valley girl” accent on so many characters. Im pretty sure that wasnt how people talked back then. It was free, so it makes me just want to buy a better narrated version.

Grimm Brothers - of course 5 stars

Grimm tales r a safe bet to come out on Top!

My review is for the Narrator.
I wasn’t so sure to listen a long time, thru all the tales with one voice.
I’m so glad I took the time. She is amazing. Perfect Voice for a long book of varied tales told by Brothers Grimm.

Loud breathing spoils the story

I adore the Brothers Grimm, but the narrator breathes loudly and frequently. I can't make the third chapter. it is that obnoxious.

awful reader

this is all of the stories. very repetitive. the bros Grimm were folktale collecters, after all, and the same themes repeatbover and over. the reader, who showed promise and occasionally read very well, ruined it by using awful and unconvincing accents. sometimes pretty racist. devils are often described as "black," and she gives them accents like badly done Afro-american speakers. Her English and Irish accents are pretty dreadful, but perhaps the silliest is when she gives a king or princess a "southern" accent.

Interesting but…

Some of these stories are great and amusing, some are really weird, and some are shockingly prejudice!! If there’s not already a disclaimer for sensitive and outdated stereotypes there should be. The narrator is decent but in some of the stories her voice feeds into these negative stereotypes. I didn’t like that part. But overall the collection was interesting in a historical story telling sense.

Kelly Lintz Makes These Stories Even Better

Her range of voices lets her infuse into every fox, bear, goose, king and stepmother a personality so vivid you can see them. These are delightful stories, read here with all the zest they deserve.
