Publisher's Summary
2022 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Novel
“A fantastic novel.... You are going to like this a lot.” (Stephen King)
“What’s more thrilling than a fictional character speaking to us in a voice we haven’t heard before, a voice so authentic and immediate - think Huck Finn, Holden Caulfield, Mattie Ross - that we suspect it must’ve been there all along, that we somehow managed to miss it? Daniel, the protagonist of Will Leitch’s smart, funny, heartbreaking new novel How Lucky, is just such a voice, and I’m not sure it will ever completely leave my head, or that I want it to.” (Richard Russo)
For listeners of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Nothing to See Here, a first novel as suspenseful and funny as it is moving, the unforgettable story of a fiercely resilient young man living with a physical disability, and his efforts to solve a mystery unfolding right outside his door.
Daniel leads a rich life in the university town of Athens, Georgia. He’s got a couple close friends, a steady paycheck working for a regional airline, and, of course, for a few glorious days each fall, college football tailgates. He considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy - despite the fact that he’s suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair.
Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he’s not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he’s almost sure he sees her being kidnapped....

Did not know what to expect
This was a good “quick” listen (I sped up audio to x1.2) which was our book club select this month. The characters were likeable, I enjoyed the underlying crime-solving aspect, and the personal journey that Daniel goes through to discover his worth.

No need for Political Jabs
To Will Leitch: References such as “white nationalists”, southern systemic voter suppression”, and “right wing memes” to name a few, are in no way related to the story/plot and add nothing to it. Better to leave out the political jabs and focus on the story.

Ok overall, except for the terrible language
This book seemed inspired by The Woman in the Window but wasn’t nearly that good. All the local references to Athens were fun, but the SMA details felt overdone and the language was unnecessarily filthy. Narration was fine.

Sooo
So if you like a good story mixed with middle school level passive aggressive political comments mixed throughout this is your perfect book. Cheers!

Good but maddening
Good story with good narration but I found my anger surfacing when the author made snarky political references as an aside which were demeaning to the conservative side of the aisle. I believe those opinions should be kept to himself as they had nothing to do with the story. Why alienate half of your readers? If the author writes any more books I would pass over them for that reason.

Awesome story
I have used Audible for about a year now and have not reviewed a book. Not because I haven’t read a good book but because I didn’t feel the need to review one. This book however is different. High fives to Will Leitch for writing a story about a hero who has a disability. I work with disabled children and am thrilled to see you portray someone who is strong and independent who happens to have a disability. I try to teach my students they can always do something. I can now recommend a great book for them they can connect with. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Delightful little thriller
This is a fun book but there aren’t many surprises. It reads like a love letter to Athens and a text book about SMA wrapped up in a somewhat predictable mystery, For all that it was hard to put down. A perfect summer beach read. The narration is decent.

Worth it for many reasons
This book was creatively both a stand alone inspiration on living with with a terminal disease, and also those around them. All that heavy stuff was delivered with humor and a mystery with “Rear Window” vibes. So much better then several new reads I’ve heard!
