Publisher's Summary

In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I do".

Good thing Oliver is such perfect Husband Material.

Predictable But Otherwise Enjoyable

Plot was a little bit predictable. The performance of the reader, like the first one, was good and pleasant to listen to. Overall it was a good book to listen to, a sweet love story and a fitting ending for Oliver and Luc.

Still cute as the first

Overall a great story. Performance was top notch but the story was a little much at some points. I really liked the commentary on the various styles and types of weddings, as well as the introspection into marriage for the LGBTQ community. I will say, Luc was definitely more of a little shit than I believe needed to be at times, especially at the end, but damn it if I didn't love them all the same.

I Struggled A Little

So. Many. Weddings.... I liked the attempt to show different ceremonies and what the social impact of them. I don't think this novel could have been told a different way... but I hate awkward speeches and there were just so many....

Disappointing Story, Would Not Recommend

Unfortunately this sequel lacked the enjoyment of the first book with a plot that was tiresome and repetitive, main characters that lost their likability, and formerly enjoyable side characters that were left to rare moments and flat impact. Had it not been for the narration, I would have dropped the book before the end.

The story lacked depth behind sentiments that could have otherwise been fascinating to explore. As a result, everything feels half-baked and it is easy to disengage from investment in the content. Seldom does a story leave me feeling as let down as this one did.

Big meh

There should be a rule that romance books with fake dating as the main trope shouldn't be allowed to have sequels unless they're MAGNIFICENT.

While the first book felt well paced and plotted, this one felt very episodic. And none of the episodes were that interesting. If this was any other book couple, I would have probably stopped listening due to a mix of being bored and the sheer amount of times I was frustrated by the main characters.

The one thing that held this audiobook together was the incredible narration once again. If this same narrator is back for the 3rd book, I might just make myself listen just for him.

I seethed though the last half hour

I am genuinely upset that the characters didn't get married. Its like the whole book made a mockery of the insitution of marrage and the fight that LGBT people fought to get married. A fight by the way that is still (in some places) happening and that some people are trying to take away in North America.

It would have been fine if at any point the characters had been like "I dont actually want to get married but I want to be with you." (at any point besides the last 10 pages) I still would have been upset at the name of the book however. I am absolutely pissed off that a book called Husband Material did not end in a wedding, or rather ended with the two grooms running off together. I can think of a dozen ways I would have prefered this book to end.

But no, apparently weddings and marriage mean so little to people that it ended with no husband's to speak of. the promise of the title never coming to fruition and leaving us unsatisfied.

Just Meh...

I really loved the first book. This one, however, just felt like the author was under obligation to write another book and didn't want to break her contract. It was pretty much the same thing over and over again, just coated in different contexts.
For more context on my review.. I pretty much got through the first book in less than a day, but it took me almost a week to get through this one.
Great performance by the narrator, though.

Nope -loved the first but the second was a miss

I feel let down and disappointed after the first which I enjoyed so much. It was too waffley, and angsty and ultimately disappointing after you, as a listener persist through 13 hours of waffling, angst and nonsense. Boo!

Emotional and lighthearted

I see this is now part of a trilogy - so I imagine the next book will be fatherhood.

Luc, the loveable mess, was a tad less loveable and a tad more an irritating egoist in this book, and the 4 weddings and a funeral homage means we all know where the ending went (and that weirdly felt both contrived and hugely real).

But overall this was just the book I needed right now. The writing is witty and clever, and the humour tends to be broad, but there are times when the issues are so very real and messy and relatable. I will defiinitely be getting Book 3 of London Calling when it comes out.

Narration was perfect
