Publisher's Summary
A terrifying ghost story from the Queen of Icelandic crime, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, author of the Thora Gudmundsdottir novels.
The crunching noise had resumed, now accompanied by a disgusting, indefinable smell. It could best be described as a blend of kelp and rotten meat. The voice spoke again, now slightly louder and clearer: Don't go. Don't go yet. I'm not finished.
In an isolated village in the Icelandic Westfjords, three friends set to work renovating a derelict house. But soon they realise they are not alone there - something wants them to leave, and it's making its presence felt. Meanwhile, in a town across the fjord, a young doctor investigating the suicide of an elderly woman discovers that she was obsessed with his vanished son. When the two stories collide, the terrifying truth is uncovered....
What the critics say
"Yrsa is one of the most exciting new voices in the crime thriller world." (Peter James)

Good story, uninteresting characters
The storyline was captivating, and it kept me coming back with cliffhangers and foreshadowing that you could piece together before the big reveals. However I found the characters where not relatable and honestly annoying.

Great listen!
It took me a bit to get into it since the story flips between 2 story lines and I needed to get all of the characters straight in my head but loved it! Great book!

Could not stop listening!
This book is so creepy I couldn’t listen when I was going to bed. Daytime listening only! I thought the narration was fantastic, emotive and no irritating speech patterns. There were some great twists in the story, which was great because I usually know what’s going to happen halfway through most books.

Very spooky
I've read all this author's work in English and this one seems to stand out for its use of unexplained phenomenon and ghastly scary consequences for even the main characters. The 'trio' of characters who head north to renovate an abandoned home are hard to relate to because of their selfishness and treachery. But perhaps that is the point. A good scary read though I do prefer her other work.
