In 1986, Paul Newman and his closest friend, screenwriter Stewart Stern, began an extraordinary project. Stuart was to compile an oral history, to have Newman’s family and friends and those who worked closely with him, talk about the actor’s life. And then Newman would work with Stewart and give his side of the story. The only stipulation was that anyone who spoke on the record had to be completely honest. The result is The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man—revelatory and introspective, personal and analytical, loving and tender in places, always complex and profound.

This isn't a memoir like most memoirs. It's an audiobook only Bob Newhart could have conceived, with his unique worldview and irrepressibly wry humor. Oh, and there's a fair bit of plain silliness, too.

Awesome audible book
I grew up to Newhart’s tv shows and the book was also the same awesome. I love his clean witty humour wish there were more like him. That is one man I’d love to meet and sit down and laugh with.

I love Bob!
I agree with Monica from Woodstock, GA. How can you not love Bob? I was a kid when the first Bob Newhart show was on TV, so had not heard all the old routines. Perhaps if I had the book would be a rehash, but for me it was just a joy to have Bob back in my living room.

Pure Bob Newhart and no one does it better!
Christmas 1962, my older sister, a recent college graduate, gave me 2 LP's. My Name José Jimenez by comedian Bill Dana and Button Down Mind. I was 13 years years old. She always loved my laugh and those LP'S provided our family with lots of them.
I wish I could say that those albums propelled me into a career in comedy but no they didn't. I believe they did form my sense of humor and effect my personality. I certainly fell in love with Bob.
I read the reviews before purchasing and was wondering how anyone could have a negative opinion of anything Bob does. After listening, I realized why- they probably are too young to really know the comedic geniuses that Bob talks about. Too bad.
For those looking for a upbeat, uplifting listen, this recording is for you.

Great read
Newhart's comedy sprinkled in here and there with a light biography of Newhart's experiences make this a great read. This is really more of Bob Newhart telling "behind the scenes" stories of events in his life with his dry wit than a bio. Thoroughly enjoyed this, only wish it was longer.

One Funny Guy
Bob Newhart was just a few years before my time, but I did have exposure to the Newhart shows and his comedy routines recently, and he's become one of my favorite all-time comedians. In this, his audiobiography, he is a little older, and isn't as energetic as he used to be, but he's still as witty and enjoyable as ever. It's a refreshing look at a good man and a good humorist.

I am so glad Newhart read this himself. Who else could tell a Newhart story? And what an inspiring and funny life story? He could have quit many times but kept plugging away and found his place. America is so blessed that he did not stay with his accounting career. And his last chapter is so correct - we need to be able to laugh at ourselves and not be so PC!

Good, not great
This is a long comedy album. You wil laugh. The key to it is that Bob himself reads it. It is the telling of the story telling that makes this worth listening to. I gave it 3 stars as it is consumable, not memorable.
