Story
The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn’t an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer.

The memoir of a neuroscientist whose research led him to a bizarre personal discovery, James Fallon had spent an entire career studying how our brains affect our behavior when his research suddenly turned personal. While studying brain scans of several family members, he discovered that one perfectly matched a pattern he’d found in the brains of serial killers. This meant one of two things: Either his family’s scans had been mixed up with those of felons or someone in his family was a psychopath.

Whenever we worry about what to eat, how to love, or simply how to be happy, we are worrying about how to lead a good life. No goal is more elusive. In How to Be a Stoic, philosopher Massimo Pigliucci offers Stoicism, the ancient philosophy that inspired the great emperor Marcus Aurelius, as the best way to attain it. Stoicism is a pragmatic philosophy that teaches us to act depending on what is within our control and separate things worth getting upset about from those that are not.

The pitch went like this: Chris Butler, a retired cop, ran a private investigator firm in Concord, California. His business had a fascinating angle - his firm was staffed entirely by soccer moms. In fact, Butler employed PI Super Moms: attractive, organized, smart, and trained in investigative techniques, self-defense, and weaponry. This American Life host Ira Glass described them as "MILF: Charlie's Angels." When this story came across Pete Crooks's desk when he was working at Diablo magazine in 2010, he was instantly hooked.

Entertaining, Endearing and Interesting
I have to confess I picked up this book on an audible suggestion, and I had no idea who Joe Kenda is or anything about his show. I liked him instantly and his no-BS way of telling stories. I listen to a lot of true crime and the authors tend to dance around things and rarely express their opinions or feelings on them. Joe isn't like that, he'll tell you exactly what he thinks of something - swear words and name calling included. It's refreshing, and at times, hilarious.
He has a vulnerability behind his tough cop attitude and short fuse, and it becomes more prominent when he talks about some of the real distressing cases. You can tell how seriously he took his job. Also interesting to hear his measured opinions on citizens owning guns.
The stories were all really interesting. Some were damn heart breaking.
He's got a new fan in me, though the TV show is ending I plan to binge it all. I hope he makes another book. He was so interesting and it was good to hear the complexity of managing this type of work along with a family.

Phenomenal, Captivating, Sincere & Well Balanced.
This book is a wonderful testament to the horrors and humors of police/detective work. There is a perfect balance of ups and downs that allows this book to be more sincere in it's brutality then anything I have seen before. The way it is written gives you a clearer view of what it's like to be in his shoes then the television show couple ever hope to accomplish.
This is an adult read, approachable by most while still appreciated by those in the field, yet it was totally written for him as an ode to the absolutely whole hearted impact of detective work, as well as the complete hold it has over your life and psyche, both while on the job and long after the uniform is hung up.
Definitely give this a read if you like true crime, if you watch homicide hunter, if you work in the field, if your want a good psychological horror story or if you just want some advice on how to be a better criminal, lol

Real talk from a real cop! Couldn't put it down!
Thank you Kathy for nagging Joe to write this book! I absolutely loved it! The stories were raw and sometimes gruesome, sometimes involving horrific acts against children. Joe Kenda tells it like it is, but there were times I found myself laughing because of his dry cop humor. A really great read for fans of his show "Homicide Hunter".

Gritty with dark humour
This book is based on real life events. Theres a jaded tone to the book, one that all cops have. There are horrific cases and stunning cases. all told matter of factly. It's not for the faint of heart but we'll worth the listen.
