Publisher's Summary

A classic thriller from the best-selling master of action and suspense.

The atomic submarine Dolphin has impossible orders: to sail beneath the ice floes of the Arctic Ocean to locate and rescue the men of weather station Zebra, gutted by fire and drifting with the ice pack somewhere north of the Arctic Circle.

But the orders do not say what the Dolphin will find if she succeeds - that the fire at Ice Station Zebra was sabotage and that one of the survivors is a killer....

pleasure

I love the story, the well drawn characters, the suspense, and I can not imagine anyone other than Jonathan Oliver reading any of Alistair MacLean's books. And I really wish he'd hurry up with the rest of my favorites, like San Andreas, Golden Rendezvous, Circus, and the lot.

Much Much Better Than The Movie

I have seen the movie numerous times. The book was very different and far better. Jonathan Oliver is a great narrator for this book. I heartily recommend this book.

New Narrator, Please.

I couldn't make it past two hours into this book because the narration was horrendous. Hardly ever changed his voice for any character, he would just change between high and low for the tone of his voice and then would just start talking louder for some people's voice but, he would keep the accent. He would also constantly pronounce things in the weirdest way I've ever heard. I know the narrator has a English accent but, I've never heard anyone from the U.K. pronounce some stuff as way off as this. I wouldn't waste your money or token on this book.

the end of an 18 years read!

Wy 18?i bought this book for one Egyptian pound in my hometown mansoura 18 years ago and read very few lines then it was one of huge pile of books removed by my mother for being lagging in my college and filling the house with books this of course was supported by my father. Now they're both gone and I graduated long time ago.May they rest in peace .For the book i read it listening at the same time.Excellent experience the narrotor had a very good grasp of the reading process may have misread one word across the whole book. The story itself is a whodunit in the cold war era showing meticulous details about navy life that I was sure the author was working in the field which I found it to be true.I wish there were few more pages after the final revelation but it's ok.Happy I could read it after all this years

Great book, strange American accents

This is a classic Alistair Maclean book, one of my favorites. I was hoping to find The Golden Rendezvous, but sadly no audiobook is available. The British narrator has a nice voice, but his American accents are pretty terrible. The American characters all sound like they have a mashed up vaguely pseudo-Southern accent. Sometimes you get the feeling he just gives up. And there is so much American dialogue! So it gets quite distracting and takes you out of the story. Surely there are many excellent British voice actors who can do a better American accent?

Not Bad

This book was good, not great. The story was interesting but slow in some places. And the narrator... pretty bad at American accents.

Suspenseful

Anyone who has seen the film version will enjoy the original novel that inspired it. The premise is the same, but the story is more involved, and adds a Whodunit element that was edited out of the screenplay. Well read by Jonathan Oliver whose voice reminds me a little of Patrick Mcgoohan. Well done!
