Publisher's Summary

The warm, sparkling first novel from Melanie Murphy, author of nonfiction best seller Fully Functioning Human (Almost) is full of heart, humour and magic.

Erin is about to turn 30, and her life is definitely not where she thought it would be. She hates her job, she's jealous of her perfect flatmate - and she has just called off her wedding.

A trip home to Ireland to celebrate her birthday with her beloved grandmother is exactly what Erin needs, and she's spent days preparing herself to break the news about her broken engagement.

What she's not prepared for is the gift she receives: a secret family heirloom that will change everything.

Could this be the answer Erin has been looking for - the key to the happy life she's always dreamed of? Only time will tell....

Thoroughly enjoyed!

I knew I was going to enjoy this novel based on what I know of Melanie Murphy from social media, but it exceeded all my expectations. Great premise, fantastic writing, and characters that you feel you’ve know forever. The narrator was lovely too; I found it really brought the story to life being able to hear the different accents. Would recommend to anyone!

Charming & Magical Fiction Debut

"If Only" is a beautiful, charming story that successfully interweaves real-world London with magic and love. The main character, Erin, is flawed and self-centred, but relatable and so real I feel like I'm reading the diary of an old friend. My heart ached recognizing some of Erin's self harm and negative thinking that I have also felt and thought. Most of the supporting characters are just as fully drawn, with their own struggles, hopes, and dreams. There are a couple of characters I thought would go on to have larger, continuing roles, but as soon as their usefulness to the story ended, didn't come back again. The writing was gorgeous (especially the metaphors and similes. Love a good description!) I adored the audiobook narrator. She managed to capture Erin's voice perfectly, and the other characters were just as well done (and her ability to switch accents is remarkable!)

The only part that felt a bit off for me was in the concept of the magical pendant that Erin uses to see alternate timelines of her life; there are certain details that need a bit of suspension of disbelief in order to accept that the visions of "if only" would happen that way if she'd made certain decisions differently. But once you get used to suspending that disbelief, it's still a gorgeous story and poignant writing. There is a heck of a lot of exposition, but not a turn-off, since it follows a lot of other "magical artifact" type storytelling.

The ending was totally satisfying, yet I wish there was more. Can't wait for the author's next novel!
