Publisher's Summary

Nnedi Okorafor's acclaimed first novel for middle-grade children introduces a boy who can access super powers with the help of the magical Ikenga.

Nnamdi's father was a good chief of police, perhaps the best Kalaria had ever had. He was determined to root out the criminals that had invaded the town. But then he was murdered, and most people believed the Chief of Chiefs, most powerful of the criminals, was responsible. Nnamdi has vowed to avenge his father, but he wonders what a 12-year-old boy can do. Until a mysterious nighttime meeting, the gift of a magical object that enables super powers, and a charge to use those powers for good changes his life forever. How can he fulfill his mission? How will he learn to control his newfound powers?

Award-winning Nnedi Okorafor, acclaimed for her Akata novels, introduces a new and engaging hero in her first novel for middle-grade listeners set against a richly textured background of contemporary Nigeria.

Ikenga review

I really enjoyed the book. The narrator was really good at giving the characters their own personalities through the different voices he did. I found the story to have some comedic aspects to it. Enhanced by the author' Nigerian accent.
I like the idea of "the man" and the power he had to scare off the bandits in this book. All in all a quick and fantastic book.

Another Great Book by Nnedi Okorafor

Your child may be an auditory learner and this audiobook was great. Thank you again Nnedi Okirafor and narrator Ben Onwukee for bringing this story to life. Suspence, intrigue, laughter and love. I look forward to more African authors writing and producing more great works. Ubuntu.

good middle school book for comic fans

Loved the narrator, and the story was a perfect middle-grades drama for comic fans: bad guys aplenty, and good intentions that sometimes go awry

Another good novel by Nnedi Okorafor

This novel follows Nnedi Okorafor's many other great novels. As with others, she digs into the gray areas in life. There are no easy answers, and everything is more complex than it seems.

Took me a while to realize this was a kid’s book… lol

I really love this author. Very good story-telling, with many aspects that make a for a solid teen mystery: A few good red-herrings and some close reliable friends.

For the most part I liked the narrator, but I really hated how he read the voices of female characters of all ages. They all sounded like shrieking old women, even the youngest of them. And they were inconsistent. It would have been stronger if he narrated without attempting character voices.

Ikenga - A story to enjoy!

I downloaded the book for a lengthy drive. I enjoyed the narrative. The story had much depth as it expanded into the relationships the boy had with his friends and family.
