Publisher's Summary

The first of Homer's great epic poems, the Iliad portrays the final days of the Trojan war. The Iliad has stood the test of time and is still one of (it not the) best depictions of ancient warfare. It is an essential precursor to the infamous journey of Odysseus.

Translated and Narrated by Stanley Lombardo. Introduction by Susan Sarandon.

What the critics say

"Lombardo's Iliad both sings to 21st century ears and holds true to Homer's original vision; the blind bard would be proud." ( Publishers Weekly)

Excellent piece for any kind of journeying

This book I have started on the page, repeatedly but could never digest. Told by Stanley Lombardo, I found I could immerse myself in the story and enjoy this classic. The chapter summary ahead of the chapter helped me get the gist of what was about to take place. I even came to appreciate the cicadas and drums that punctuated the telling. An excellent listen, and though you can listen anywhere, I found the story matched well with both driving and hiking.

Accessible and well read

Firstly, I find it remarkable that the translator is narrating, and I’m sure that must bring additional insight, but regardless he does a really good job! The translator uses modern language and I found it made the story flow, easy to listen to and easy to understand. Since I’m interested in the story and the lessons behind it, I wasn’t so concerned with the fidelity of a classic translation.
The narrator has an american accent but not an objectionable one, in fact quite pleasant and rather unique. He uses emotion and volumes well and does not overdo it but at the same time it’s not dry.
