Publisher's Summary

It began as another newspaper assignment, a celebrity profile of the children's television icon. But in Fred Rogers, Texas journalist Tim Madigan found more than a fascinating subject. From their first meeting in 1995, at Rogers's invitation, the two became unlikely friends, a deep and abiding relationship that lasted until Rogers's death in 2003.

In that time, Madigan found Rogers to be much more than the calm and compassionate personality of television. He was a person of unique human greatness who embodied love, compassion, and wisdom his every waking moment. He was the transcendent being who guided Madigan through periods of life-threatening depression and the tragic death of a sibling and helped him heal his difficult relationship with his father.

I'm Proud of You reveals Fred Rogers as a person who deserves a place among history's greatest people. It chronicles male friendship at its finest and most powerful. And it is a book that has already brought hope and inspiration to many thousands of its fans. With this second edition, including a new afterword by the author, the inspiration continues.

The world needs more people like Fred Rogers. This will always be one of my favorite reads.

Testimony To Friendship

It's hard to know how someone develops into the compassion and care which Fred Rogers showed the world; in fact I'm not sure a biography of Mr Rogers would adequately help me move in this direction. However, after listening to this book I do have a sense and a hope of knowing what it feels like to have a friendship with someone like Fred Rogers and how infectious that compassion and care is.

This book provides a moving and heartfelt account of the depth and impact of friendship, how a simple 4-letter acronym (I.P.O.Y) can be life-changing, and the importance of allowing the reality of loss to show. It honours Fred Rogers as a human who sought to make other humans be more human.

Also the choice of narrator is as if provided by divine appointment: soft-spoken, very easy to listen to, with tone denoting genuine emotion.

I do the math when it comes to Audible purchases (and yes, using a credit is still a purchase). I know I will not re-listen to certain books for a variety of reasons which really makes me simply lazy for not getting a library card instead.

This is one of the choices I have made where I know I will re-listen to it again if no other reason than to know there are friendships out there which show this level of vulnerability and compassion.

I am immensely grateful for Tim sharing his story of friendship and vulnerability and how it encourages me towards being more open in my relationships. I, too, am proud of you Tim, for however much that is worth.
