About this listen

“A frothy confection of sea-foam, young love, and derring-do.” —NPR

From the New York Times bestselling author of So This Is Ever After, a young prince must rely on a mysterious stranger to save him when he is kidnapped during his coming-of-age tour in this swoony adventure that is The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue meets Pirates of the Caribbean.

Prince Tal has long awaited his coming-of-age tour. After spending most of his life cloistered behind palace walls as he learns to keep his forbidden magic secret, he can finally see his family’s kingdom for the first time. His first taste of adventure comes just two days into the journey, when their crew discovers a mysterious prisoner on a burning derelict vessel.

Tasked with watching over the prisoner, Tal is surprised to feel an intense connection with the roguish Athlen. So when Athlen leaps overboard and disappears, Tal feels responsible and heartbroken, knowing Athlen could not have survived in the open ocean.

That is, until Tal runs into Athlen days later on dry land, very much alive, and as charming—and secretive—as ever. But before they can pursue anything further, Tal is kidnapped by pirates and held ransom in a plot to reveal his rumored powers and instigate a war. Tal must escape if he hopes to save his family and the kingdom. And Athlen might just be his only hope…

Excellent performance from the reader, very cute love story between two pretty interesting characters. Very much a queer retelling of The Little Mermaid.

Great for a younger audience

Best word to describe this tail - adorable. Once again a great performance and a fun story. A little cheesy in some parts but I still enjoyed it all the same.

Very cute and a fun read

Good for a short one off book and great for representation but not a favorite in terms of building the romance up.

The main romance felt a little forced. There was perfect buildup to moments that could have been used to allude to liking eachother but they were just used to show the instantaneous love between them. It just didn't feel natural. Athlens dialogue also seemed odd which took away from the story for me but I can't place exactly what was off about it.

There was lots happening but it felt like the scenes only really brushed the surface of their potential. I guess I'm used to book series so the plot line covered in this book seems like it could have very easily been used to make 2-4 books rather than just 1.

Voice actor was pretty good. There were a couple odd moments that seemed like maybe some editing didn't go quite right or something that was meant to be left out was included but it's possible I just had some glitches. I also did not like the voice done for the Athlen, but that's a personal preference.

Good but didn't live up to my expectations.
