Publisher's Summary

Macmillan Audio presents In My Own Way, Alan Watts' acclaimed autobiography, published for the first time in audio.

In this audiobook, Alan Watts tracks his spiritual and philosophical evolution from a child of religious conservatives in rural England to a freewheeling spiritual teacher who challenged Westerners to defy convention and think for themselves. From early in this intellectual life, Watts shows himself to be a philosophical renegade and wide-ranging autodidact who came to Buddhism through the teachings of Christmas Humphreys and D. T. Suzuki.

Told in a nonlinear style, In My Own Way wonderfully combines Watts’ own brand of unconventional philosophy and often hilarious accounts of gurus, celebrities, psychedelic drug experiences, and wry observations of Western culture. A charming foreword written by Watts’ father sets the tone of this warm, funny, and beautifully written story of a compelling figure who encouraged seekers to “follow your own weird” - something he always did himself, as his remarkable account of his life shows.

This is Alan Watts at his very best, as a free spirit.

If you don't listen to anything else by this extraordinary soul, read this autobiography. Freed from the constraints of his extraordinary intellect, Watts explains how he came to be the way he was (and remains, in fond collective memory). He does this by showing, rather than telling, with delicious wit and kindly humor. And the narrator is superb!

Why not hire a British voice actor?

I am fascinated by everything Alan Watts has ever said and published. I absolutely adore him. I was very excited to listen to his autobiography until I realized the narrator was putting on this irritating accent. Difficult to get past, but worth it for a more personal view of Watts.

Loved This Book

I've been a fan of Watts since I bought "The Wisdom of Insecurity" at the Paperback Booksmith ("Dedicated to the fine art of browsing") in Coolidge Corner, Brookline in around in 1966. I thought this autobiography was wonderful. There is so much to appreciate that I bought the Kindle version after listening to the audiobook.

I particularly liked his description of his life in California in the 1960s. Watts was obviously a brilliant man, and he really shows off his skill with language and ideas in this book. The reader is excellent - you feel like you're listening to Watts read this book.

Highly recommend!
