About this listen

“Well, now I’m committed,” he thought to himself after telling a national TV game show audience that he wanted to ride a motorcycle to Mongolia with his winnings. He felt the fear that commitment always induced in him; he was hoping they might have edited that bit out. Commitments are something he tried to get as far away from as possible, the only other constants in his life being twenty-five years of financial prudence, travel and motorcycle obsession. So there he was, committed to going very, very far on a motorcycle with his meager prize money. Consequently, he spent a winter on eBay and a spring in the garage preparing his $1000 KLR 650 for an uncertain life on the road. Armed with a cynical humor, a strong sense of direction, a vague sense of balance, and no sense of proportion, he embarked on a 15,000-mile solo motorcycle ride to see what would break first; bike, body, or budget. Leaving an indifferent existence in England behind he headed east, looking for purpose, a new life, and a new location to live it. He was in search of greener grass.

I have no idea why I found this book so good.

Its not a book about motorcycles. Its not a book about travel.
Its not about culture, polities or new world self help.
Its just about some very normal working guy, who decides one day to take a dare to do something unexpected.

He works his ass off, saves his money, then one day he sets off on a used bike without a great plan.

The only word I can use to describe the author is honest. What I can not figure out, is how he can describe his feelings and observations so personally. I feel complete empathy for the author as he goes on his adventure but know I do not have the talent or courage to express these feelings in print like he has, even if I’d been along for the ride.

Really no spoiler alert is required, because as soon as this guy left home he won, and his life changed forever and we see it happen the whole way.

Absolutely loved the book! I have listened to Graham on various podcasts for a couple of years and knew I’d like the book but it was even better than I thought it would be. I recommend the audio book without hesitation and look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

Exceeded my expectations!

Couldn’t handle his strong accent. Every time he said pho-o (photo) and he said it a lot, I cringed. The story was good and if you like this type of travel, this book may inspire you.

Good story.
