Publisher's Summary

From the author of the award-winning Flights of Angels comes the fourth book in the Exit Unicorns series.

It is the winter of 1975 in Northern Ireland, and the Troubles are at their darkest hour. Casey Riordan is missing, and Jamie Kirkpatrick has just returned home from two years in a Russian gulag.

Desperate to find her missing husband, Pamela Riordan makes a devil’s bargain with the one man she believes can help her, forming an alliance which will have grave consequences for her and those she loves.

For Pamela and her family, caught in the quagmire of 800 years’ worth of hate and betrayal, compromise - both that of body and soul - is inevitable. All of them face an uncertain future in Northern Ireland - a country of shadows, where nothing is as it seems, and the slightest misstep can have deadly consequences.

Shimmering historical detail and masterful storytelling combine in a tale which sweeps us across continents and seas from the bloody events of the Troubles to the rough streets of post-Vietnam San Francisco, and make this fourth book a journey of both turbulent intensity and heartbreaking choices.

Powerful, raw and unfiltered emotion.

If you haven’t delved into the world of Exit Unicorns, then you are missing out on an epic work of Historical Fiction!

In the Country of Shadows is the fourth book in this phenomenal and award-winning series and continues the story of Casey, Pamela, Jamie, Patrick along with Noah, and a host of many unforgettable characters navigating the terrible tragedy that is The Troubles.

This part of the story has us traveling to Paris, San Francisco, Maine, and back across the sea to Ireland where the conflict in Northern Ireland continues to spill blood. This story is about truth, trust, loss, survival, and acceptance. It is full of love and heartache and is powerfully emotional.

I first read In the Country of Shadows in 2016 and again in 2020, just after the release of book 5 Where Butterflies Dream.
I have now read this fantastic book as an immersive experience (book+audio) and I can't fully describe the feelings this book leaves with you.

Gary Furlong has outdone himself once again. He delivered pure and powerfully raw emotion with this book, and he has done a spectacular job of bringing the story to life and making you feel as if you are experiencing it all firsthand.

The audiobook for book 5: Where Butterflies Dream is set for release later this year. I can hardly wait!!

The immersive reading experience with this series is so extraordinarily wonderful. I can’t imagine experiencing this series any other way. I highly recommend it! It is an amazing experience.

Bringing the troubles to life!

Do not download this audiobook if you plan to have a productive week! I literally could not stop listening! This series about the troubles in Northern Ireland is excellent and this installment is no exception! I was downloading the kindle version of the next book as the last chapter played! I hope it comes out on audible soon too!

Riveting

Cindy has done it again with another breathtaking installment in the Exit Unicorns saga. I am enthralled with her writing, the poetry, the visual nature of the interactions. I feel like I am in the scenes, they are so real to me. Gary’s narration is top-notch as well, switching back and forth between Irish, English, American, Russian, and French accents conversationally. It’s always clear which character is speaking from the tone of his voice. When listening to this book, my mind was completely carried away into another time, another life. I think that’s the highest achievement a book can bring a reader. Superb.

Amazing, again!!!

Cindy is one of my favorite writers. I’ve read all of her books multiple times. But there is something about when you listen to Gary read them that add even more life to the books. Truly amazing!

What's left to say? Brilliant as always!

If you're purchasing this audiobook, there isn't much more to say about the brilliance of Cindy and Gary that hasn't already been said. Being the 4th book in the series, I don't need to go over the plot. Just know that this is an absolutely phenomenal continuation of the Exit Unicorns story.

Should be in fantasy category.

I just finished the last book of the series available on Audible. I will listen to the sixth book when it is released- assuming it will be. The book series starts slow- the first time I purchased Exit Unicorns - the first installment -I returned it. I kept seeing the series recommended so thought I would try again. Still slow but I made it a point to stick it out. It is a good series overall. It is entertaining and kept me listening. It held my attention and managed to bug me if I fell asleep before tagging a bookmark, so overall pretty good.

About 1/2 way through the book it hit me- this is more fantasy romance. How lucky is the leading lady, Pamela. to have all 3 of Ireland's top men at her beck and call?? I mean really the top 3! They all love her, would do anything for her- from loving to a distance to killing for her. I believe it is a historical fiction title. I will admit I learned more about Ireland and it's history than I knew before I started the book. The story itself is developed well and the characters are meaningful with a broad appeal if a little outrageous when you stop to think about it. The book is entertaining if far fetched. Listen and enjoy - just take it as is and do not put much independent thought into it!!

Another Epic Piece of the Exit Unicorns Series

Author Cindy and Narrator Gary spare no emotional punch in this amazing saga. A beautiful read, Cindy uses amazing language to convey the plight of these flawed characters. Gary almost lifts the written word into a tangible being. That is so say, these characters come to life in the best way.
