Publisher's Summary

Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in - not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel's relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he's a city boy through and through, and it's clear that this small town is one more place he won't fit in.

Rex Vale clings to routine to keep loneliness at bay: honing his muscular body, perfecting his recipes, and making custom furniture. Rex has lived in Holiday for years, but his shyness and imposing size have kept him from connecting with people.

When the two men meet, their chemistry is explosive, but Rex fears Daniel will be another in a long line of people to leave him, and Daniel has learned that letting anyone in can be a fatal weakness. Just as they begin to break down the walls keeping them apart, Daniel is called home to Philadelphia, where he discovers a secret that changes the way he understands everything.

Good story - Not as great narration

I guess I’ve gotten used to some better narrators because this one’s not great - MANY better ones and I guess others thought the same too since there’s a change after this first book in the series. The narrator did improve as he went along, but still not to the level I have come to enjoy from other narrators at this level. I love this author so I hope the next narrator is better. The story line is great with excellent character development.

saddened by this book...not in a good way

The reviews lied, I'm sure that to some this is this awe-inspiring love story, but to me it wasn't. it seemed so one-sided like Rex just kept giving and giving and the other guy was doing the opposite.

It's crazy how when his father dies. He goes from wishing that his father had died instead of his mom when he was younger to being in a fog like he can't believe his fav family member is gone. None of them supported him, they don't have a relationship. It's very stilted and there's no bond. So I don't understand this fog. And no, after death, it doesn't just develop.

I wish this book also had Rex's point of view. I think it would have made it 10 times better to listening to. If Rex's point of view was there and there was another narrator.

The narrator they chose does nothing to aid this book. In fact, it ruins the book. I started to read this book. But because it was longer than I wanted. I figured I would listen instead... big mistake. The narrator just reads, but his emphasis, a lot of the time, is on the wrong words, and it's almost like he reads the entire book in this calming, breathy manner and it takes away the intensity of their emotions.
