Soren is a nameless, stateless man, tasked with keeping watch over Maricol’s borders. He isn’t meant for politics, only dealing with the dead. His past was buried in the poison fields, but after a fateful encounter with a prince, Soren realizes he can’t keep the magic hidden inside forever. Vanya Sa’Liandel was the spare who survived the Houses’ murderous games to become the crown prince of Solaria. He has a duty to his country, but he’ll owe his life to the wardens. Story
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

Story
My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Story
Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Publisher's Summary
Take a chance.
Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin doesn’t trust easily, and he most certainly doesn’t trust spies. He’ll work with them if ordered to, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. Except Agent Sean Delaney is proving to be the exception to the rule. There’s something about Sean that gets under Alexei’s skin and won’t let go. Alexei would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in what lay beneath the agent’s mask. When they’re assigned together for a mission, Alexei vows to keep Sean safe all while trying to coax the hot agent into his bed.
Hold onto hope.
Agent Sean Delaney has spent his entire adult life living a lie for his country. When the MDF tasks him with finding evidence of criminal wrong-doing against the owner of a private military company, Sean knows exactly how to play the game to get what he wants. He just doesn’t know how to handle Alexei’s advances, nor his own attraction to the younger soldier. Being a spy is lonely work, and Sean knows he should keep his distance, but saying no to Alexei is impossible from the moment they first kiss.
In a world of lies, the truth can be deadly.
When the mission takes a turn for the worse, the only thing left to do is run. In the wake of betrayal, and in the path of danger, can their fragile trust survive the battle?
In the Shadows is a steamy gay sci-fi military romance with a HFN ending that skirts HEA. There is military violence within the story that may not be suitable for everyone, as well as explicit intimate scenes not suitable for listeners under the age of 18. This is a direct sequel to In the Ruins and listening to the previous audiobooks in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

OMG! I need the next one, amazing!
Hailey Turner's writing is so damn amazing! I don't know why I waited so long to read/listen to this series!! There is just so much action that's written with such careful and amazing detail, I feel like I am there witnessing everything go on. I feel like I'm there. This team is truly an alpha team so professional and poised and on it. I loved that this book focused on Alexei, I really wanted to hear his side of the story and his life, though I did miss Kyle and Jamie haha.
Sean and Alexei are super cute and Sean helps bring this story closer to the enemy. The action in this book had me on edge, the emotional side and action side were both amazing.
Greg Boudreaux does an amazing job changing his voice for the characters, I do have to say that his voice for Alexei is one of my favorites!

Greg Boudreaux is back again! So glad he is! 😍👍
In a world over 200 years in the future where the United States coastal cities are surrounded by water due to global warming, metahumans possessing supernormal powers live amongst the normal human population. Splice, a chemical weapon of mass casualties, results in the death of almost every human being exposed to it. For those that live, some are benign and law-abiding. For others, superhuman powers are used to commit crimes including acts of terrorism.
As a result of his cover for the previous mission, Jamie Callahan agrees to hit the campaign trail in support of his father's bid to run for President of the country. With Jamie gone, Kyle is stuck spending time in the apartment that he shares with Alexei. Lucky for Alexei, he is sent to cover Sean's back as it gives him a way to escape Kyle's blue 'missing Jamie' mood. Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin's distrust for Agent Sean Delaney did not prevent him from brutally protecting him when Sean confronts a villain from a past undercover operation with the CIA. When the two are assigned together for a mission, it doesn't take long for the men to start craving each other. When the mission goes belly up, both men are there for each other and both get safely back home thanks to Alexei's fire skill and Sean's ability to become intangible.
Once again author Hailey Turner writes a sci-fi military adventure packed full of ALL that is essential in ANY wonderful book: great world-building (a world populated with interesting characters possessing supernatural powers), excellent character development (the leads grow together as team members, friends, and lovers), distinctly defined conflict with an overarching plotline for the entire series, and clearly delineated conclusion, which eliminates the immediate threat applicable to the current novel. In addition, she checks off the additional boxes of impeccable pacing (the rate at which the writer introduces key elements in the story) and precise balance (the distribution of varying types of elements in the narrative)! She provides readers an incredible M/M action-driven romance that isn't dependent on the quantity or quality of sexual scenes.

Even better than the first two
In the Shadows is the third book of Hailey Turner’s Metahuman Files series. Events in this book build on those from the first two and while a complete story, there are ongoing story arcs so you’ll definitely want to listen to them all & in order. As such, there may be spoilers to previous books in my review.
I enjoyed this one even more that the first two (which I already praised highly). I think partially because the world building is established and Turner has given us some characters and story arcs to really sink into and get to know even better. I already liked Sean & Alexei, but them getting together was a wonderful experience. Plus, Turner has this great mix of suspense/thriller, romance, and a little bit of humor. The action scenes were unstoppable.
I’m really looking forward to In The Blood.
Narration:
Greg Boudreaux continues to be wonderful. And this is a chance to really enjoy his Russian accent skills. I also like that character voices from previous books are consistent. Makes this series absolutely bingeworthy.

Techno-Thriller Romance with a Great Narration
In The Shadows is book 3 in the highly addictive and entertaining Metahumans Series by Hailey Turner.
This book is written from Sean and Alexei's POV , so their developing relationship takes the main stage. This subplot is interwoven with the other plots and advances the story main arc.
Greg Boudreaux voice is mesmerising . His pacing is great and the way he convey emotions and sexy times are rousing and hot AF. Perfect for this very steamy and romantic series.
At this point of my review , I don't need to say who is who and what is the plotline in The Metahumans Series as for you to get to this point , you must have listened to book 1 and 2 . These books aren't standalone ; need to read it in the chronological order they were published.

YES! In the Shadows! YES!
WOW! "In the Shadows" is just WOW! 🤩🤩🤩 Safe to say I absolutely love this story and can't wait to read more. The dynamic between Alexei and Sean is teasingly sweet and so very different from what we (the readers) have seen between Jamie and Kyle. The action, comedy, story/plot, smut and romance are mixed together in a blend of unending adventure. I'm excited to see where the story leads and what happens next with Alpha team and the M.D.F. Bravo to Greg Boudreaux 👏 👏👏 Masterful narration

Shadows and Secrets
This is the third book in the Metahuman series and it definitely should NOT be read on its own. This series has an overarching plot line with a lot of character development that occurs in the previous two books. Reading this book on its own will not be as enjoyable as reading it after the first two books.
Alexi Dvorkin and Sean Delaney finally get their love story. I was so excited for their book since I’ve been in love with Alexi the first time I met him. He’s so gruff and unapologetic with an unwavering loyalty to his team and family. He deserves wonderful things in live and Sean is exactly what he needs. Sean—this poor man living his double life, I was so happy when the truth was finally revealed to his family. The plot for this book was exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. Hailey Turner does such a fantastic job with all her action scenes. There was not one part of this book that I did not love.
Greg Boudreaux narrated this audiobook, just like he did for the previous two books. He really does such a wonderful job with the character voices –especially those Russian accents. I really love his performance and thoroughly enjoyed myself as I listened to this book. I highly recommend it.

Best story so far, least favorite romance
Probaby by favorite story but least favorite romance out of this series so far.
The story events were much more fun to read, lot of action packed sequences and all of the characters you have gotten to know by now are using their powers in full force. For the first time in the series i really felt like i can actually distinguish who's doing what and what their powers are.
Theres a lot of cooperation this time around with all the members and combining their powers for the story events.
I do like the pair up between the 2 MCs and how they work together. Its neat to see them do some under cover stuff and how they navigate their mission that way.
I do like more when the pairing is split and all the members get together because it creates a chaotic, but easy to read, mess of powers being used.
The romance is cute, by now though it felt kinda unnatural, didn't really feel as seamless as the last few books. Its sometime forgettable too other then a few fun lust filled moments between them.
I think the romance really took a backseat mostly because main over arcing story line became more of the focus instead of building the relationship between the romantic characters. The relationship building occured more for the entire team as a whole as i finally can really get to know all of them and their quirks better.
Still recommend it highly if you're liking this series =) the m/m romance subplot is a good bonus to a fun action flick type story this series is evolving into.
