Publisher's Summary

"Incense and Sensibility is a tender, well-crafted novel, as much about finding purpose as it is about falling in love. Dev writes with such rare empathy and humor that I often found myself holding my breath on one page only to be giggling by the next. This is the kind of book you finish with a whole-body, happy sigh and a warm ache in your chest where the characters will live on. Yash and India’s story will stick with me for a long time." (Emily Henry, New York Times best-selling author of Beach Read)

Yash Raje, California’s first Indian-American gubernatorial candidate, has always known exactly what he wants - and how to use his privileged background to get it. He attributes his success to a simple mantra: control your feelings and you can control the world. But when a hate crime at a rally critically injures his friend, Yash’s easy life suddenly feels like a lie, his control an illusion. When he tries to get back on the campaign trail, he blacks out with panic.

Desperate to keep Yash’s condition from leaking to the media, his family turns to the one person they trust - his sister’s best friend, India Dashwood, California’s foremost stress management coach. Raised by a family of yoga teachers, India has helped San Francisco’s high strung overachievers for a decade without so much as altering her breath. But this man - with his boundless ambition, simmering intensity, and absolute faith in his political beliefs - is like no other.

Yash has spent a lifetime repressing everything to succeed, including their one magical night ten years ago - a too brief, too bright passion that if rekindled threatens to destroy the dream he’s willingly shouldered for his family and communit...until now.

I really tried to like it.

It felt like there was so much potential in this book and I listened half way through because I knew I could return it anymore, but it’s just awful. I can’t stand how the reader speaks. No one talks like that! I often had to mentally pause to figure out what the reader meant by her inflections because they didn’t match the story at all.
The book has potential but it hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s the same thing over and over and over again and I’m only half way through. I’m really disappointed

Excellent Installment in the Raje Family Stories

I had wondered many things about Yash, and they were answered. It was lovely to see the other characters, although we hardly saw the psychic sister and grandmother this time. The characters were likable, the story arc worked perfectly, and the backstory was believable as were character motivations and flaws. I love this narrator.

Great story of the Raje family

I loved this story of Yash and India. It made me feel safe, content, and optimistic and gave me hope for a better future. It is one of those books that I will reread when I need to quiet my mind, wind down, and recharge.

The book is about the scars you see and don’t see, moving past trauma toward your goals, focusing on what’s important, and making the truth count. Yash and India come to terms with their pasts, let go of what they cannot control, take better care of themselves, embrace truth, and live the life they want and deserve –with families that frequently check up on them because they love and care for them deeply.

Heartwarming & Timely

I enjoyed this heartwarming & timely story that doesn't lose sight of the romance as it tackles some difficult issues like racism, gun control, and the healthcare crisis. I loved the main characters and their second chance at love. India is loving and compassionate but never a pushover. Yash seems perfect on the outside but is dealing with so much trauma. Both have the support of their loving, interconnected families behind them.

Narrator Soneela Nankani does an excellent job making Incense and Sensibility a terrific listen.

Best one yet!

There are not enough heart eyes for this series. This book. OMG THIS BOOK. I have always had a soft spot for Sense and Sensibility in the Austen pantheon. The moment I started relating more to Elinor rather than Marianne was one of my personal metrics of "I am a grownup". This Indian American retelling is SO FREAKING GOOD. Sonali Dev's prose is just gorgeous, and each installment of the series is better and better. Full of emotion and truth, I can't WAIT for book 4!

Terrible, just terrible

I’ve read all the books in this series and can say with confidence that the quality of writing has gone from sliding downhill to plummeting off that cliff Yash likes to sit on. The protagonists are stupid and unbelievable. India and Yash are “sense” while China and Song are “sensiblity.” India and Yash pine over each other constantly and somehow know each other’s thoughts, even though they haven’t spoken in a decade. There’s so much heavy-handed omnipotent narration about their feelings for one another and so little dialogue that it’s hard to stomach. China’s story is barely dealt with other than to describe how she and Song are mooning over one another but are destined for heartbreak thanks to a multitude of heavy hints. Seriously, so much foreshadowing that I’m surprised those girls ever saw daylight. I’ve got 2 hours left and am not sure that I will be able to make it through. At this point, it’s a hate listen. It’s disappointing because I liked the first in the series a lot, the second slightly less and downhill from there.

Head-smackingly stupid protagonists

I had a hard time paying attention to this. Kept drifting off. Super frustrating plot contrivances and protagonists. In the end I just didn’t care if they ever got together.

Perfect

Loved every minute. Love the series and this might be the best yet. Somali Dev is becoming an Instabuy author and great narrator as well.

Swoon

I love a Lovers Reunite story but This is soooo much more! The drama, the intensity! The action! Everything about this family of novels makes me swoon so hard my roommate was questioning my stability. I’m in love! Also .. China’s entire storyline lifted my heart to new heights!

Great Read

I really enjoyed this book. I can not wait to see what the Raje’s will do next.
