A full-on immersion into California's hippie/surfer scene in the sixties. Weird, funny, borderline ridiculous at points, it was a wonderfully written, engaging story full of great characters and an incredibly vivid setting. It was my first foray into Pynchon and, though I'm not sure if it's representative of his work or not, it seemed like a good place to start.
