Story
Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Yes, Mindy Kaling is the genial Hollywood celebrity who posted twelve selfies from a single Oscar party, but that smile took work. In this hilariously honest essay, Mindy reflects on the social anxiety that she traces back to the slices of white cheese her parents served at her ninth birthday party. Little has changed in thirty years--least of all the fear of being judged forever. It’s probably best to just back away.

Story
From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes it as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world.

For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a best-selling book of the same name. There comes a time in every sitcom actress’ life when she is faced with the prospect of writing a book. When Ellie Kemper’s number was up, she was ready. Contagiously cheerful, predictably wholesome, and mostly inspiring except for one essay about her husband’s feet, My Squirrel Days is a funny, freewheeling tour of Ellie’s life - from growing up in suburban St. Louis with a vivid imagination and a crush on David Letterman to moving to Los Angeles and accidentally falling on Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Jenna Fischer's Hollywood journey began at the age of 22 when she moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of St. Louis. She was determined, confident, and ready to work hard. So, what could go wrong? Uh, basically everything. The path to being a professional actor was so much more vast and competitive than she’d imagined. It would be eight long years before she landed her iconic role on The Office, nearly a decade of frustration, rejection, and doubt. If only she’d had a handbook for the aspiring actor. Or, better yet, someone to show her the way. Jenna wants to be that person for you.

Publisher's Summary
Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”
Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!
In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Mindy is my BFF in my head & she didn't disappoint
Mindy is my best friend in my head. I've always felt that way. But like a true best friend, I didn't want to gas her up and read her first book as soon as it came out...no no, I waited 7 years so she'd know that it isn't always about her. I knew she wouldn't disappoint. Mindy has this way of making you feel like you're not alone. The experiences she has lived through or the insecurities she describes while also getting easily distracted by food feel like she's talking to my soul. Like me, Mindy is neurotic, dramatic, always hungry and balances being totally insecure with suddenly not caring what others think. I will not wait 7 years to read her 2nd book...but don't tell her that!

Shocking
I have always been a big fan of Mindy Kaling, but I don’t feel there’s any room for racism period. Her comment about Indian women having a civilized advantage to African people because Indians have refrigeration and don’t need to divide up UN food rations, is disgusting and disturbing. Africa as a whole is continuously the recipient of ignorance and racism masqueraded as comedy. The “civilization” mindy is referring to is a western ideal that is rooted in yt supremacy. Living and operating at a standard that is different than western society does not make one uncivilized. Africa is home to 54 countries all with rich, diverse, and beautiful history and traditions.
If the western ideal of riches, “education”, and standard of life is the control, then Africa surpasses North America and Europe by leaps and bounds. If it wasn’t for African scholars and dignitaries, Europe would never have learned to bathe, they would never have been introduced to astronomy, architecture, and civility. The Western world OWES Africa, instead they patronize and look down on Its people.
Considering the fact that India was not only colonized and brutalized by the British Empire, but parts of Africa were too, and yet Mindy somehow thinks her countries society is superior to Africa’s? Why is that Mindy?

If you like Mindy, you'll enjoy this listen.
I gave 5 stars for performance and 3 for story. Mindy is very funny, and I like her style, so I liked the book. Like Tina Fey in Bossypants, Mindy writes about things that all women can relate to, and that most women agree with on some level. She does an excellent job of reading (some authors don't do as well as you would want), maybe since she's also an actress. She definitely gave excitement to the reading. Her voice is a little high-pitched, but again, I like Mindy so I enjoyed listening. The male readers were AWESOME and believable.
I gave 3 for story because she is quite superficial and materialistic, so you'll find those themes running through the entire thing. It's funny, especially if you're being light-hearted about it, but it's not the kind of story that keeps you thinking and expands you as a person. The story itself is pretty forgettable, but it was very fun and enjoyable while it lasted. I'm assuming that was her goal.

Gets annoying after a while....
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book may have been funny as a written book, but as an audio book, the whole experience just gets annoying after a while... there are some funny bits in there, but the content gets a bit repetitive and doesn't really engage. After a few chapters, it just feels like I am listening to a random rant.

Glad that Mindy narrated this herself. She addresses being compared to Tina Fey in the book but this book was right up there with Tina Fey's and Amy Pohler's books. No point
This book is all over the place and I'm left wondering what the point of it was supposed to be.
