Publisher's Summary

Mark Hawkins, former park ranger and expert tracker, is out of his element, working onboard the Magellan, a research vessel studying the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But his work is interrupted when, surrounded by 30 miles of refuse, the ship and its high-tech systems are plagued by a series of strange malfunctions and the crew is battered by a raging storm.

When the storm fades and the sun rises, the beaten crew awakens to find themselves anchored in the protective cove of a tropical island...and no one knows how they got there. Even worse, the ship has been sabotaged, two crewmen are dead, and a third is missing. Hawkins spots signs of the missing man onshore and leads a small team to bring him back. But they quickly discover evidence of a brutal history left behind by the island’s former occupants: Unit 731, Japan’s ruthless World War II human experimentation program. Mass graves and military fortifications dot the island, along with a decades-old laboratory housing the remains of hideous experiments.

As more crew members start to disappear, Hawkins realizes that they are not alone. In fact, he suspects they were brought to this strange and horrible island. The crew is taken one by one, and while Hawkins fights to save his friends, he learns the horrible truths: Island 731 was never decommissioned and the person taking his crewmates may not be a person at all - not anymore.

It Was A Difficult Write, But An Incredible Listen

I believe it’s said in the book that it was a difficult novel for Robinson to write. I wish that wasn’t the case, but it was such an amazing book. Learning the history, thinking of the atrocities that man is capable of…we do need to be reminded of that from time to time, but added in, the sci-fi and the suspense. It was a wonderfully told story and one I will relisten to over and over. I especially admire how Robinson can discuss dark topics, while infusing some humour into it. A big thank you to Bray for bringing it to life! Not everyone understands humour in the darkness, but if you’ve worked in certain fields, you truly understand the need for it. I hope others can see it for what it is, blowing off steam.

Like a movie

The easiest way for me to describe this book was like experiencing a movie in my mind. Action packed, suspenseful, and fun to the very end.

Terrible.

One-dimensional characters. Mediocre writing. Silly story line. Waste of credit. But... great narration by good ol' R.C. Bray.

AI could have written a less cliched novel

Rarely do I stop listening 25 minutes into a novel. Once I hit the endless description of the turtle autopsy early on (after the absolutely cliched opening scene on the boat with the protagonists), I pulled the plug. It was like he used a character template for each character. Funny how all the women as described in terms of attractiveness, but not the men. This is weak sauce.
