About this listen

“A smart, taut, mind-blowing thriller full of heartbreak and betrayal that moves along at breakneck speed. Readers will be obsessed!”—Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of Just The Nicest Couple

Everybody lies. Even the ones you think you know best of all . . .

Olivia Bender designs exquisite home interiors that satisfy the most demanding clients. But her own deepest desire can’t be fulfilled by marble counters or the perfect rug. She desperately wants to be a mother. Fertility treatments and IVF keep failing. And just when she feels she’s at her lowest point, the police deliver shocking news to Olivia and her husband, Park.

DNA results show that the prime suspect in a murder investigation is Park’s son. Olivia is relieved, knowing this is a mistake. Despite their desire, the Benders don’t have any children. Then comes the confession. Many years ago, Park donated sperm to a clinic. He has no idea how many times it was sold—or how many children he has sired.

As the murder investigation goes deeper, more terrible truths come to light. With every revelation, Olivia must face the unthinkable. The man she married has fathered a killer. But can she hold that against him when she keeps such dark secrets of her own?

This twisting, emotionally layered thriller explores the lies we tell to keep a marriage together—or break each other apart . . .

A great story!

One of my favorite mysteries this year. Compelling and fast paced. I loved every moment.
I thought I had an idea of who dunnit? Several times. Only to be surprised by the next move.
A great story, with several good twists, and very interesting characters. As a lover of good thrillers, this one hits all the marks. You’ll love and hate how you think you know the answers, only for them to be swatted away.

Obviously twists, sexist

I really appreciate that this book takes on the very real struggles of infertility that people who get pregnant face and value that aspect of the novel, but that it is linked to anti abortion rhetoric is whack, ESPECIALLY right now in time, right after Roe vs. Wade was overturned. Both abortion and infertility are a part of reproductive rights and framing them as opposites contributes to the very stigma this author purports to want to undue (re infertility). That this occurred within a novel based on the murder and raping of women - a genre others use to mobilize feminism - is the most whack. Lastly, the story wasn't even that good - both twists (there is a midway twist than an end of novel twist) we're immediately obvious. Honestly, I'm a little bummed Julia Whelan agreed to read this book - I can usually trust that if she narrates something, it won't be overtly sexist at least, and will typically be well written.

It was hard to not listen to this in one sitting!

Once you start this book, there is really no stopping; this is an one-sit reading experience.
Not only is it well-written, but the plot pace is blazing fast & the twists are perfectly timed to strike when you least expect it.
I loved the author's honest charge into the tough subject of infertility with a rawness that you can appreciate and admire.
Julia Whelan is an engaging narrator & I will definitely be searching for other books she has narrated for future to-listen books.
