About this listen

Acclaimed novelist Tom De Haven recreates the early years of the Man of Steel - the world's most popular and enduring superhero.

Opening with the young Clark Kent on a date, the novel takes an entirely fresh approach to the emergence of his superpowers and the start of his newspaper career, following him from rural 1930s Kansas across America to Hollywood in its golden age and then to New York City. He meets a worldly Lois Lane and conniving political boss Lex Luthor, and begins his battles against criminal masterminds, mad scientists, and super villains inspired by fascists.

This fun and fast-paced novel of thrilling invention, heroic escapes, ill-fitting costumes, and super-sized, coming-of-age angst is sure to appeal to devoted fans.

As a long time fan of Superman it was great to listen to an interesting retelling of the classic tale with a more realistic tone.

Every time Superman gets rebooted - on television, in film - they feel the need to tell his origin story. Growing up on a farm, coming to the big city, becoming a reporter, meeting Lois Lane - and becoming Superman.

This is different. Superman’s origin envisioned as a noir story, with a background of the Depression, the Dirty Thirties, gangsters, political corruption, set in real American, with historical figures as background characters.

I love it. It isn’t “canon,” a text version of a graphic novel. It’s Superman!

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s something completely unexpected

I know that this is a standalone novel.i enjoyed it as this as a standalone novel. but I wish that there were sequels so that this author could take my money. I just love that it focuses on clark.

The 1930s America that De Haven paints is vivid and atmospheric, serving as much a character in the story as Clark himself. From the dusty roads of rural Kansas to the bustling streets of New York City, the setting is rich with historical detail.

The audiobook of "It's Superman!" is a superb adaptation of De Haven's novel. Scott Brick's narration makes for an enthralling experience that both honors and expands upon the source material. For fans of Superman and newcomers alike, this audiobook offers a unique and compelling take on the legend of the Man of Steel.
