Publisher's Summary

The Kaul siblings battle rival clans for honor and control over an East Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis in Jade Legacy, the pause-resisting conclusion to the Green Bone Saga.

Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same.

Battered by war and tragedy, the Kauls are plagued by resentments and old wounds as their adversaries are on the ascent and their country is riven by dangerous factions and foreign interference. The clan must discern allies from enemies, set aside bloody rivalries, and make terrible sacrifices...but even the unbreakable bonds of blood and loyalty may not be enough to ensure the survival of the Green Bone clans and the nation they are sworn to protect.

Fantastic Pay off

I saw a lot of reviews saying the second book was slow or dull. But all of that build up was paid off wonderfully in this book.

A sweeping saga

True to its name, the final book in the GBS is a sweeping tale spanning more than twenty years chronicling the key events starting from the aftermath of Jade War. Fonda once again anchors us in the roots of this trilogy: family and clan politics. And we get ample doses of both. Though Anden, Wen, and Hilo showed immense development in the 2nd book, their characterizations plateau in Jade Legacy. Shae, whom I found lacking in book 2, gets an even lesser development or an arc here.

The spotlight in Jade Legacy is instead split among a larger cast, most notably the next generation Kauls. We get enough characterization to grasp the motivations and personalities of Niko, Ru, and Jaya, but I wish we had more page-time dedicated to fleshing out the intergenerational dynamics between them and Hilo-Shae-Wen.

Politics has been a central cog to this machine and Fonda spends a lot of time in setting the stage before letting it all unfold. Poetic justice is never overrated, and the way Fonda delivers her justice for certain key antagonists like Bero and Ayt Mada deserves a special mention.

The clan is my blood, and the Pillar is my master. The GBS is a series that I won't forget for a good long time to come. It has firmly cemented itself over the course of its three books as the best written speculative fantasy in my recent memory. To those who say otherwise, I offer you a clean blade.

Wonderful book

This was a fantastic finish to the trilogy. The pacing was a little slow at times, but that only served to lull you into a false sense of security when things ramp back up again.

My take on book 3

I personally didn't enjoy this one on the same level I did book 1 or 2. That's not to say, it's not a good read, I just felt compared to it's first two installments, that Jade Legacy comes across as too slow in a lot of parts. I didn't care for the time skips all that much because sometimes it felt like it would build tension for a particular plot point, only to kill it with the time skip. I also didn't find the next generation of the Khal family as compelling, but I think I'm a little bias, since you get to spend so much time with their parents in books 1 and 2. The writing style itself is still great, I love the descriptions and Fonda Lee's voice. I love the setting and the world building, just didn't care for the pacing.

Amazing characters

I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much in a book. The way she has drawn out the characters and the way you see time passing and things changing… I felt nostalgic for a time I never lived in and I cried a lot…

Generations age and burdens repeat

This was going to be a three star for me and then the brilliant cycles of tradition, honor culture, character flaws, family strength just resonated with me down to my soul.

well done Fonda Lee.

Awesomeness me finale to the series!

What a great book, great performance and just all around great experience this series is. If The Godfather mixed with super powered Yakuza sounds like a setting you would enjoy, then I whole heartedly recommend Fonda Lee’s Green Bone saga!

Great narration, great book

Narration was perfect for this series. Seriously perfect. These book were incredible on their own, but I’m half convinced I wouldn’t have liked them quite as much if I had read instead of listened.
