About this listen

This is a biography of James Baldwin, author, one-time preacher, and civil rights activist. He chose David Leeming, a close friend and colleague, to write his biography and granted him access to his correspondence. Leeming traces his life from his birth in Harlem in 1924 to his self-imposed exile in Europe, his later years as political activist, and his public funeral in 1987.

I know as a author, teacher, singer ,freedom rider he was brilliant. As himself he was so lonely. That is hard to hear in the book.

Two sides.

A solid biography of an important figure of the 20th century American politics, literature, theatre, and popular culture. Pleasant and compelling narration. Unfortunately, formatting of chapters seems to be poorly mapped from original work. This causes confusion, with irrelevant running titles during playback that obscure chapter titles and combine to make several very long running sections of several hours.

A solid and entertaining listen
