Publisher's Summary

From debut novelist Jason June comes a moving and hilarious sex-positive teen rom-com about the complexities of first loves, first hookups, and first heartbreaks - and how to stay true to yourself while embracing what you never saw coming, that’s perfect for fans of Sandhya Menon and Becky Albertalli.

There’s one thing Jay Collier knows for sure - he’s a statistical anomaly as the only out gay kid in his small rural Washington town. While all his friends can’t stop talking about their heterosexual hookups and relationships, Jay can only dream of his own firsts, compiling a romance to-do list of all the things he hopes to one day experience - his Gay Agenda.

Then, against all odds, Jay’s family moves to Seattle, and he starts his senior year at a new high school with a thriving LGBTQIA+ community. For the first time ever, Jay feels like he’s found where he truly belongs. But as Jay begins crossing items off his list, he’ll soon be torn between his heart and his hormones, his old friends and his new ones...because after all, life and love don’t always go according to plan.

Just gross

The narrator was good, and the ending was good. The cheating, however, was not; the third quarter of the book was simply unreadble with him treating albert (basically the perfect man) like a pule of trash

Jay is toxic AF lol

I enjoyed the story I DID but the main character was annoying me the whole time with his stupid decisions. I know he is young and was following what he was being taught but have a little common sense when someone on your life is that willing. I’m not trying to give anything away but yeah. Oh and the only thing that kind of annoyed me (no spoiler don’t worry) is him repeating that damn list of I heard that one more time I was gonna scream!

A good book, but....

Before you read too far, this was a really good reading of the book. I thought that the reader did a great job, and that overall it was a really interesting story. I did think that it was a poor portrayal of an LGBT youth growing up and figuring out what it means to be gay. It was an overly-sexualized, horny portrayal with a meaningful ending tacked onto the end. The no shame, but it left me feeling that they focused on the wrong aspects. Still a great book, and a great read, but if you don't want to listen to a high school senior rave about having their first time and being sexually charged, don't listen to this one.

A very difficult listen

I read and listen to a lot of books and frequently enjoy books geared for younger audiences just as much as books with more mature story lines. I think I'd have had a problem with this book even as a teenager. As an adult, it was bad. There have only been two books in my entire life that I haven't finished. This book almost became the third. There were definitely times when I thought if I hear "frack", "Lord and Taylor", or that list again, it will be the end of my time with this book. Instead, I would just walk away from it for days at a time. Thanks to the skip forward button, I was able to solve the issue of hearing Jay's Gay Agenda, or any other list, read repeatedly, and I powered through to the end today. The book was just awkward and really unrealistic. For example, Mr. Lord and Taylor fashionista is going to shoot down every costume idea thrown at him, but fashioning a huge butt cheek (that looks like a nipple-less breast) is the idea he thinks is a winning costume design??? Perhaps the author was trying to capture the awkwardness of being a teenager. If so, the goal was achieved. Repeating that list over and over and over was just exhausting though. I'm sure someone out there will read this book and love it. All I can say is that I most certainly did not.

Characters Blah!

So I try to support "coming out" stories as often as possible because they have an opportunity to set an example for so many people, younger and older, who may be struggling with the process. The notion that a small town country boy with limited gay options moving to the big city is huge because there are many living in those kinds of places where gay options don't exist. In this instance, I did not find a credible relationship or a person with whom I felt a connection or any empathy. Jay's best friend Lou, perhaps they had a warm and supporting friendship in the past, but Lou's attitude through the whole story seemed like Jay was on the hook for everything. Aside from being pitiful, she was one sided. She could do what she wanted with Chip but expects Jay to be dutifully by her side. Max, snotty Reece, the college boys, all of whom were arrogant and self absorbed. Albert may have been decent but was highly judgmental about the "lying by omission" concept. In this story, it is unfortunate that Jay fell into the lion's den and had to learn the hardest lessons really fast.

Beautifully Written, M. Sanderlin is Excellent!

Mark Sanderlin delivers a fantastic performance in this wonderful story! I can't wait to find out what else he has narrated.

Snarky, sassy, sweet and so full of soul, Jason June’s Jay’s Gay Agenda kept me smiling from the very start! I’m thoroughly impressed by the pace this talented author keeps up as Jay takes us along for the ride of a lifetime.

Growing up as the only out gay student in a very small town, Jay’s culture shock is understandable when he’s plunked down in sophisticated Seattle at the start of his Senior year in high school. In the process of crossing items off of his to-do list, Jay finds out that growing up has more to do with being human, than it does with how one identifies.

Issues like loyalty, understanding, honesty, and feeling wanted and accepted, are universal. And learning how to function in society has its challenges, no matter where you call home. We all can relate to some of the things Jay faces, and just watching Jay navigate his way through them is a pleasure.

A beautifully written, heartfelt story, I absolutely adored Jay’s Gay Agenda.

3 Stars for sure

Humorous, quirky, and sex positive.

Definitely a coming of age story that wrenches your heart as things spiral and get pulled together. Jay has spent so much of his life as the “gay kid” and now he’s in Seattle where the label doesn’t fit anymore, so what happens when he has to actually figure himself out? A messy journey.

Best Pro: Asian male love interest.

Worst Con: anal sex without any douching??? Ew

Just could not take it.

We got it the first 25 times, Why did he need to read his list so many times? The story seemed good, but I had to stop listening. I could not take another read of his list. I don't give up on books, but this one, I stop just after chapter 5.

Tedious

An easy book to put down. While Jay is a list-maker, there is too much repetition of Jay's "gay agenda." It was nice to see a book about gay youth portrayed in such a positive way, but I felt I wasn't respected as a reader/listener with any ability to recall the items on Jay's agenda, especially at the beginning where the list seemed to be enumerated point-by-point ad nauseam. Incidentally, Jif is a peanut butter. A gif, pronounced with a hard G as in good-bye, is a file format.

A nice story to relax with

A good book to listen to when starting to listen to audiobooks or when you just want to not think of something.
Not a book that makes you think.
Jay is extremely annoying, Albert is the cutest alive and all the other characters are fine.
The books is nice with a few great moments but most of the time it’s just fine.
At some point in my first listen to the book I wanted to scream at jay and the VSB or all the times I heard the list over and over again.
Overall- a nice story for flights or doing something while listening to this book
