À propos de cet audio

Dante’s Inferno meets Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi in this all-new dark academia fantasy from R. F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Babel and Yellowface, in which two graduate students must put aside their rivalry and journey to Hell to save their professor’s soul—perhaps at the cost of their own.

Katabasis, noun, Ancient Greek:

The story of a hero’s descent to the underworld

Alice Law has only ever had one goal: to become one of the brightest minds in the field of Magick. She has sacrificed everything to make that a reality: her pride, her health, her love life, and most definitely her sanity. All to work with Professor Jacob Grimes at Cambridge, the greatest magician in the world.

That is, until he dies in a magical accident that could possibly be her fault.

Grimes is now in Hell, and she’s going in after him. Because his recommendation could hold her very future in his now incorporeal hands and even death is not going to stop the pursuit of her dreams....

Nor will the fact that her rival, Peter Murdoch, has come to the very same conclusion.

With nothing but the tales of Orpheus and Dante to guide them, enough chalk to draw the Pentagrams necessary for their spells, and the burning desire to make all the academic trauma mean anything, they set off across Hell to save a man they don’t even like.

But Hell is not like the storybooks say, Magick isn’t always the answer, and there’s something in Alice and Peter’s past that could forge them into the perfect allies…or lead to their doom.

Editorial Review

A descent I longed to stay in
R.F. Kuang has been an auto-download for me ever since The Poppy War trilogy broke my little soul, so I knew Katabasis would hit hard. But I didn’t expect it to stay with me like this. A dark, cerebral descent into the underworld, the story is layered with mythology, philosophy, and academic tension so sharp it hurts in the best way. Alice Law accidentally kills her mentor in a magical mishap and will do anything to bring him back, including venturing into literal Hell. Unfortunately for her, Peter Murdoch—her academic rival and former crush—is on the same path. What follows is a spellbinding blend of dark academia, mythic horror, and enemies-to-lovers romance in which every level of suffering mirrors the sins they are trying to outrun. Narrators Morag Sims and Will Watt deliver powerful performances that amplify the stakes and intimacy. Intense, brilliant, and emotionally consuming, Katabasis has easily become one of my favorite listens of the year.—Patty R., Audible Editor

This book leaned more heavily on YA-style internal monologues than I anticipated. While well-written, it was quite different from what I expected, especially after reading Babel. I found it less grounded and not as rich in story or depth as I had hoped. Yes, there was a lot of exploration of dark and deep topics. They are, indeed, in hell. This makes much of the content suited for a mature audience. I suspect I might have connected with it more strongly had I read it at a younger age, personally. The connections between and behaviours of the characters seem a little juvenile to me. It does have some thought provoking moments, and I enjoy the frequent name dropping of other authors and related literature that happens in the story. Like footnotes to look up later, if that’s what you’re into.

Characters are… young. Or I’m getting old.

I regret wasting a credit on this book. I tried so hard to get through it, but I realized I have zoned out way too many times to even tell someone what the story is about. Disappointing because I was looking forward to losing myself in the story.
The female character’s voice is annoying and whiny, with an American accent sometimes and then suddenly an English one. The male narrator has a slimy sounding voice that made me cringe.
Really wish I could get my credit back for this one!

Didn’t even finish the story

I have enjoyed every RF Kuang book I've read. Having had a graduate advisor who became ill and vanished for 4 months I felt Alice's panic in my bones. I love Kuang's writing style.

I suppose it’s a great book for people who enjoy debating logic theory, science and philosophers, but I couldn’t get into this book

I really tried to get into the story,
