It had the potential

I'm not really sure what happened here, to be honest. It started off with the potential for a decent storyline and spice, almost enemies to lover, and a love triangle then it just didn't explain anything. When it did eventually try to explain it was inconsistent with what was previously mentioned. All the character reactions just make no sense, and again I feel like this is because nothing is fully explained. The MFC was annoying, her decisions would switch 3 times in 1 sentence which made for a not-great story.

I almost feel like AI wrote it and couldn't nail the nuance of what the theme was supposed to be.

It just could have been a good story but fell short and that's why my review is poor.

WARNING- this book is a TEASE

Are you kidding me???? The author built up aaaaaaall that sexual tension and didn't write a single scene??? It's written like an erotica but it DOESN'T DELIVER. Prepare for confusing, LITERARY BLUE BALLS. Why make sex and relationships one of the focal points of your story but then exclude a key interpersonal experience in their evolution? One of the few couples I actually cared about and we're shut out of their story!

Be forewarned.

Here's the thing...

I was introduced to Tijan via the Fallen Crest series. I breezed through all of the books in a few weeks and must say that I enjoyed them. That's what led me to try this title. There are a few things that bothered me about the Fallen Crest series that I thought might be unique to the character ages or the characters themselves. However, after listening to Kian, I realize that this is a Tijan thing.

1. The characters are written to have a backstory that makes you either relate to or want to pull for the character. We should want these characters to have a happy ending given what they had to endure earlier in life. In theory, this should produce a full-bodied character that we can buy into. It seems that Tijan develops traumatic backgrounds for her characters, but in a way that is so obvious it seems superficial. I have trouble believing the trauma and the necessity for someone to step in to rescue them. In this way, her characters seem to fall short of their intended impact.

2. I get that Tijan writes young / new adult characters. In reality, you would expect some immaturity in the dialogue and/or actions. However, Tijan seems to want these characters to seem wise beyond their years, given their backgrounds. There are several instances where the character is supposed to say something profound, whether to make an heartfelt appeal or to "put someone in their place," but it always comes out as a childish quip. If you're going to draw attention to something that someone is going to say, especially if the impact of their words are supposed to be significant, it better be good.

I really want to be able to enjoy the books, but those two things, especially the second, have become distracting and are taking away from what could otherwise be solid new adult romance novels.

You feel this one down to your toes.

I can't put my finger on exactly why, maybe it's the intensity and mystery surrounding Kian, or the emotional backstory of their whole story, but I definitely felt the emotions for the entirety of this story.
I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I was a little confused by the characters choices seeming to against who they are, but overall it didn't take away from the book much, and I would give it a recommendation.

Pretty Good

This is a pretty good book. I didn't expect the story line, which was different. I greatly appreciate it with as many books as I read. if you want something different give this one a try you won't regret it.

Good story without a lot of boring sex scenes

I liked this book and had a hard time putting it down. I wish the characters were more developed prior to the death (I can’t call it murder like the book does cuz I don’t think it was). Some of the parts where there was supposed to be a profound statement fell flat and just seemed childish- but then again they pretty much still are children. This one could have added a couple hundred pages with back story and I would have given it more than 5 stars. I loved that the sex scenes were muted. Those get boring and over done. This was just the right amount for me.

Oh man I feel terrible giving this such a low rating but I honestly struggled to connect with the story. I think that what was missing for me was more of the past. We do get some bits and pieces but I needed more of what happened before Kian was in jail. I do like Tijans other books though, this one was just not for me.

Slow, Repetitive and Drawn Out

I survived to chapter 32 and gave up. The story was extremely slow with very little romance involved. Lots of saying the same thing over and over in a different way, very annoying. While the narration was decent, the female narrator sounded older than the male narrator and that added to the lack of any real connection between the hero and heroin. All in all this is a waste of credit.

Just Okay.

I'm a huge lover of Tijan, but this book was not good. It was incredibly slow, which I'm okay with sometimes if the steam makes up for it later on, but the "sexy" parts were glazed over and bad too. I didn't feel the connection between Jordan and Kian, and I never grew to like anything about Jordan's character. If you want great Tijan read the Fallen Crest series, or Hate to Love You.
