Great story

Ms. Miere’s narration is wonderful. Her ability to give a different voice to each character enhances the story to a new level

Unnecessary use of one word

I'd like to preface that I absolutely love the Joy Ellis books.
The narrators for pretty much all books are great, stories are great and performance is great.
Unfortunately, the use of one word in this and also in the last DI Nikki Galena series has put me off. Even in 2017 when this was written, it was unnecessary to use the 'R' word to describe anyone. It's derogatory and offensive to those that this refers to.
Hearing it once soured me, hearing it again has saddened me.
Great story until I had to stop listening at chapter 8.

Narrator not the best

I liked the story, but did not like the narrator on her men’s voices, especially Rory’s.

Narrator

Although overall done well, several of the accents and tone pitches were grating. Not my favourite narrator.

Better played at slower speed

Not a fan of this narrator, she reads far too fast. Played at .9 makes it much better than the default speed.

Another enjoyable twisty, turny, murder mystery!

Another enjoyable twisty, turny, murder mystery written by Joy Ellis and narrated by Henrietta Meire! Full of well-rounded characters, some liked, and some not so much. I really like the series so much, I'm now on to Book 5: Stalker on the Fens!

Great start to a series!

I started off listening to the Jackman and Evans series and absolutely needed more from this author once I finished the available titles from that series. I am really enjoying this series so far! The characters are great - they start to feel familiar as friends the more you listen. I enjoyed this plot and the narrator is great. I’m so pleased to have found this author!

A satisfying twisty tale

This is another excellent, well told story by Joy Ellis. It has the right amount of mystery and twists to satisfy most people. I really enjoy the D. I. Galena series with its cast of well developed characters.

The narration by Henrietta Meire is excellent as usual.

Another great 'on the Fens' suspense thriller!

The books in this wonderful detective series by British author Joy Ellis are being released in audio monthly. I have listened to the first 4 in order. Ellis is an excellent story teller. Protagonist Detective Inspector Nikki Galena is a complex and fascinating character. In this case I wish I could award award 4.5 stars. Narrator Henrietta Meire is superb.

<br />This is how much I have enjoyed this series.

I am usually extremely tough on narrators who mispronounce words, and editors who let them slide. It's not the kindest part of my nature. But when Nikki said that one of her fellow characters was an "aficiando" of history, for me, that malaprop was Nikki's, not Ms. Meire's, and I had a nice chuckle. That's how real the characters came to be for me, in Ms. Meire's versatile voice.

The plots in these books are unique, and involving, but it's my involvement with great characters that keeps me coming back every time.

Great story. Perfect narration.

I love this series about DI Nicki Galena and her team. Henrietta Meire is the perfect match for narrator. I love the accents and she does a great job of distinguishing voices of all the characters, male and female. Looking forward to the next one.

Joy Ellis needs a good editor.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Joy Ellis is a good writer, but she needs a literate editor. A good editor would point out the meaning of the word, Reticent, which is NOT synonymous to reluctant. Saying "reticent to speak" is redundant and wrong. Tantor Publishing/Recorded Books should hire me instead.

Any additional comments?

There are grammatical errors and also places where the wrong name is said.

Not as strong as the others

But do love these characters and the narrator; kept me engaged but not breathless for the next installment.

Another good mystery with Galena & Easter

DI Nikki Galena's father has died, leaving behind a mystery. His last request to her was to "Find Eve."

Nikki has no idea who Eve is.

Yet when she should be dealing with her father's death, and deciding what to do about the mysterious Eve, she has mysteries to deal with at work. A minor-league drug dealer has been fished out of a shaft in the ground at an abandoned World War II airfield, still alive, but only barely. Another drug dealer has simply disappeared, and his sister, with no illusions about her brother but great affection because they survived a difficult childhood together, is determined to find him. The current owner of the airfield is found dead, clearly murdered, but no one knows who wanted him dead.

And Detective Sergeant Joseph Easter's long-estranged daughter Tamsin has come for a visit. They are attempting to mend their relationship.

It seems worth mentioning that all of this turns out to be really small beer beside what they're going to find when they start working these seemingly unrelated cases.

This is, as is typical with Ellis, this is a good, interesting mystery with good, interesting characters. Galena, Easter, and the rest of their team continue to grow and develop, and are well worth spending the time with.

Recommended.

Drugs, Murder, Mystery and History

Book four in the series finds DI Nikki Galena making funeral arrangements for her father, who has long been suffering from dementia, with just one or two lucid moments over the recent past. One was when he told Nikki to "find Eve". Puzzled by the request, Nikki is determined to sort out who the mysterious Eve is. At the office, a drug dealer's death, after falling down a hole at the old RAF air field has the team looking for answers. DI Galena and her team begin to investigate what at first looks like an accident. All of the major players are here, which I love, and they work together seamlessly to solve the case. Joseph's daughter, Tamsin, is visiting him, and the two of them offer to help Nikki by going through her dad's old papers to find out who Eve is. Soon Sgt. Joseph Easter is back off leave, assisting Nikki and the team with the mystery at the airfield. The history of the RAF was intriguing. The tie-in with Nikki's father and his time in the RAF was brilliant. But I definitely did not see any of the airfield killings or the the history of Nikki's father and Eve coming . . . it was like a ride on a curvy high speed roller coaster . . . in the dark . . . I can't wait for the next book . . .

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nikki’s description of her feelings after her father died resonated with me, having lost my own father to Alzheimer’s. Brilliant story throughout, loved all the characters and they way they developed!

Pedestrian at best.

Having quite appreciated some of the earlier novels to listen to while I worked, this novel reading nearly drove me to distraction. The reader’s voice was so shrill and harsh that I tried slowing the speed down. The ghastly attempts at accents and voice differentiation to signal different characters was far, far below par compared to other actors used by audible. Furthermore, the lack of any sparkle, ever, made for depressing listening. I won’t be choosing this writer/actor combination again.
