Story
I’ve been in this life for 50 years, been trying to work out its riddle for 42, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last 35. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.

Story
Have you ever been told to smile more, been teased about your accent or had your name pronounced incorrectly? If so, you’ve probably already faced bias in your everyday life. We like to believe that we are all fair-minded and egalitarian but we all carry biases that we might not even be aware of. We might believe that we live in a post-racial society, but racial tension and inequality is pernicious and pervasive. We might believe that gender inequality is a thing of the past, but it is still ubiquitous.

Publisher's Summary
A pop culture celebration of Fred Rogers and the enduring legacy of his beloved, award-winning PBS show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood that offers essential wisdom to help us in our troubled times.
Won’t you be my neighbor?
For more than 30 years, Fred Rogers was a beloved fixture in American homes. Warm and welcoming, he spoke directly to children - and their parents - about the marvels of the world, the things that worried them, and above all, the importance of being themselves. Dressed in his cardigan and sneakers, Fred Rogers offered a wholesome message of generosity and love that changed the landscape of television and shaped a generation of children. Kindness and Wonder pays tribute to this cultural icon: the unique, gentle man who embodied the best of what we could be. Today’s audiences will be reminded of Mr. Rogers’ uplifting persona in the upcoming TriStar Pictures film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (November 2019), where Tom Hanks stars as the real-life Fred Rogers.
Looking back at the history of the show and the creative visionary behind it, pop culture aficionado Gavin Edwards reminds us of the indelible lessons and insights that Mister Rogers conveyed - what it means to be a good person, to be openhearted, to be thoughtful, to be curious, to be compassionate - and why they matter. Beautifully crafted, infused with Mister Rogers’ gentle spirit, and featuring dozens of interviews with people whose lives were touched by Fred Rogers - ranging from Rita Moreno to NFL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann - Kindness and Wonder is a love letter to this unforgettable cultural hero and role model and the beautiful neighborhood he created.

Won’t you be my neighbour.
Wow I have always loved Mr. Rogers and this book makes me love him even more. There were so many things that I didn’t know about his life and how truly he was a special person!! I also loved hearing that his show was in Canada and him leaving gave Mr. Dressup his start here in Canada. Mr. Rogers was a genuine person and those seem harder and harder to come by!

inspirational Look at an American Icon
It's unfortunate that the author felt the need to place his worldview into what is otherwise a wonderful look into the life of Fred Rogers. it it didn't distract me from the story.

Just What I Needed
While some of the elements of this book have been presented recently in other books and also the film with Tom Hanks, they all bear repeating. This book has been a little salve on my soul in this time of quarantine/stay home/pandemic, as I try to encourage my children (ages 12 & 14) to do their distance learning assignments in this weird world while I sew more masks or scrub caps to send off to people I may never have met (and cook or bake with my kiddos, to nourish our bodies and spirits). There is value in the repetition, as well as in remembering to approach all tasks and people with Kindness and Wonder.

Lovely Book
Such a heart warming book. It was interesting, funny and poignant. I cried during the parts where Mr. Roger's compassion was detailed in intimate moments that he shared with his viewers. Definitely a great book.
