Publisher's Summary
It’s January of 1704, and Matthew Corbett continues his mission to Italy, accompanied by Hudson Greathouse and former enemy Professor Fell. They seek Brazio Valeriani and information about the mirror created by his father, the sorcerer Ciro. Legend claims the mirror can be used to summon demons from beyond.
But fate has other plans for Matthew as their ship is disabled by a pod of whales, and they seek refuge on a secluded island. The islanders welcome them with a massive feast, but all is not what it seems. As the island pulls them deeper into its influence, the castaways struggle to maintain their grip on reality, even their very identity. Matthew must keep his wits about him and solve the mystery enshrouding the other side of the island, where an active volcano looms and a secretive creature lurks.
The King of Shadows is the eighth installment in best-selling author Robert McCammon’s acclaimed series of historical thrillers featuring Matthew Corbett, a brave “problem-solver” who now faces a challenging foe that threatens to take over his most valuable resource: his own mind.

Excellent!! As usual!…but…
Excellent as usual. A long historical mystery starting the famous Matthew Corbet. But..the author chose this book to dig a little deeper into some of the characters. Stick with it though because it all comes together nicely. Great narration. I wish the next one came out tomorrow!!

Fluff
I'm so disappointed in this book. I had looked forward to it for so long. Even messaged the author. Truth be told...the book is utter fluff. Either for the author to reach a deadline, the pressure of another in the series, or whatever. Loose knitted story line. Poor ending. Characters are present but not one is the center of attention. sad sad sad. HOWEVER, the narrator is perfection as always. Kudos to you.

Painful and where is Matthew Corbett?
I love the Matthew Corbett series, but this one was a stinker! Way too much time spent on back story of other characters. I’m here for Corbett, not an overly long story about a horse (Nemesis). Book seems like a total filler. Please let the story arc progress.

Love Matthew Corbett
McCammon has an amazing talent for storytelling. His backstory for each character gives such depth and emotion. I will not give any spoilers except that I blew through this in 2 days. Now, the wait for the last one, which will be bittersweet
